Exceeding Expectations – New Kia Xceed

By: Lisa Harper

The Kia Xceed is the newest member of the Ceed family. Described by Kia as a crossover utility vehicle (CUV), it will join existing Ceed models; the five-door hatchback, sports wagon estate and the Proceed shooting brake.

Thanks to its bumped-up ride height, increased capacity and hatchback ride-quality, the new Kia Xceed adds a new level of practicality and versatility to the Ceed line-up.

A New Dynamic

It may be part of the same family, but the Kia Xceed has its own distinct look. At the front, it features new LED headlamps and a prominent front grille with lower air intakes. While at the rear are new tail lamps and bolder body panels.

The wheelbase remains the same as the hatchback version at 2,650mm but is 85mm longer. Ride height and roofline meanwhile have been raised 42mm and 43mm respectively for improved ground clearance of 174mm and more interior headroom for passengers.

A Practical Choice

Offering incredible practicality, it has a whopping 426-litre boot, 31-litres more than the hatchback Ceed. Plus you can drop the rear bench which handily splits 40/20/40 to increase the capacity to a maximum 1,378-litres. Access is convenient too, thanks to the availability of a split-level boot floor and an automatic tailgate.

On the inside, the Kia Xceed is much more akin to its other Ceed siblings. It is offered with either an eight-inch or uprated 10.25”-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The larger of the two offering a satnav and Bluetooth connectivity as well as being compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

However, marking it out as something a little different, the Exceed will be the first of the Kia models to feature a 12.3” colour display in place of the conventional instrument cluster. While the optional yellow colour pack allows you to add a colourful touch to both the dash and the seats, should you wish.

Kia Xceed Engines

The Xceed will be offered with three petrol and two diesel engine options, with a 48V mild plug-in hybrid powertrain being added to the line-up next year.

The petrol engine options start with an entry-level 118bhp three-cylinder T-GDi engine. Next up is a 138bhp four-cylinder 1.4-litre T-GDi engine and finally a punchy 201bhp 1.6-litre T-GDi. While the four-cylinder 1.6-litre diesel engine is available in two different outputs; 114bhp or 135bhp.

All but the 1.0-litre T-GDi engine will come with the option of either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

First-class Comfort

As it will only be available with two-wheel-drive, the Xceed will never be an off-roader. Instead, it has been perfectly tuned to offer new levels of on-road finesse and comfort. Kia has introduced hydraulic rebound bump steps to the front axle of every model to better absorb road undulations. While improved steering ensures a more hatchback quality drive.
