One of the most recognisable cars on the road, a Mini Cooper has been a British icon since 1960s. Originally launched in 1959, the Mini was a radical car for its time. Leonard Lord, then head of Austin/Morris, commissioned creator Sir Alec Issigonis to design a new model for the British Motor Corporation: He wanted a car that would be a safer alternative to the bubble cars that were growing in popularity.
From there, the Morris Mini Minor and Austin seven models were born. The car was eventually renamed Mini and the famous name has remained to this day. BMW now owns the brand and manufactures modern-day models such as the Mini Cooper and Mini Clubman. Thanks to the German manufacturer's design and engineering know-how, the Mini is known for its nippy performance, dynamic appearance and nimble handling - making it a great city car.
BMW has stayed loyal to the original Mini ethos. By 'evolving' the car, they have managed to retain the car's iconic status as an emblem of British culture the world over. At the 2012 London Olympics, quarter sized remote controlled Minis were used to deliver javelins, hammers, shots, and discuss to competitors on the field. Millions of Minis have been sold over the years.
