The new Alfa Romeo Giulia is an extremely competent rear-wheel drive saloon, complete with a touch of luxury and bags of classic Italian styling. It’s fun to drive and features a range of powerful and economical engines.
The stunning exterior of the Alfa Romeo Giulia really does ooze class with its distinctive Trilobe grill, sleek curves and aggressive stance. It is irresistible from every angle and delightfully Italian with its narrow headlamps and bonnet creases.
Hop into the cockpit and you’re treated to a striking, modern interior and a well-designed dashboard with intricate stitching and a wealth of leather and soft-touch plastics. Screens and controls are angled slightly toward the driver, delivering an immersive experience, whilst the lack of unnecessary buttons gives the Giulia’s cockpit an uncluttered, clean feel. The beautifully-framed infotainment screen, meanwhile, adds a real touch of class.
The new Giulia carries four or five people with ease, while boot space competes well with others in its class at 480 litres and incorporates side and underfloor boot storage too. A wide opening makes leading bulky objects a piece of cake.
The new Alfa Romeo Giulia is available as four different variations, with entry-level cars benefitting from dual-zone climate control, 16-inch alloy wheels and rear parking sensors as well as a plethora of safety kit like lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking and forward collision warning as standard.
Under the bonnet there’s a range of engines to choose from, with the 197-bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol or a 2.2-litre diesel with either 148 or 178bhp. For fans of performance there’s a punchy 2.0-litre petrol producing up to 276bhp or for all-out grunt there’s the range topping 2.9-litre V6 Quadrifoglio with a whopping 503bhp. The eight-speed automatic gearbox results in smooth and snappy gear changes.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia’s use of lightweight aluminium on the doors and engines means weight distribution throughout the vehicle is fully optimised.
Options include driver assistant packs, sport packs and a performance pack which gives the Giulia aluminium shift paddles, a limited-slip differential and sporty SDC suspension.
