You’ve probably heard of a full service, which is also usually referred to as your annual service. What you may not know is that there are other options, one of which is the interim service. So what should you book, an interim service or a full service?
To answer that question, we need to look at three things. Firstly, we need to know what’s included in an interim car service. Secondly, we need to know what a full service includes. Finally, we need to decide what service is right for your car given certain factors.
An interim service consists of an oil change, oil filter replacement and checks of major components such as the steering, brakes, clutch, tyres, hoses and pipes. Detailed reports are given about each check that’s carried out.

An interim service is designed to be carried out every 6 months and should not replace an annual service. When considering whether to book an interim or full service you should look at how many miles you cover during the year.
If you cover more than the average number of miles, it may be worthwhile having an interim service every six months to ensure that your car is functioning well and that no parts are wearing prematurely.
Depending on the car and how easy it is to reach the necessary components, an interim service should take around an hour and a half to complete. If multiple issues are found, this time may increase.
Obviously, a full service is more comprehensive so will take longer to complete, usually around three hours.
So if you’re trying to decide whether or not you need a full service or interim service you’re going to need to know what’s included in a full service so you can compare the two.
A full service includes the oil & filter change and component checks covered by the interim service with some more comprehensive checks of the engine, brakes, drive belts and heating & cooling system. The air filter will usually be replaced and other fluids will also be topped up.
As you would expect, a
full car service
will include more checks that an interim service. You should usually expect a full service to include around 67 individual checks of your car.
A full service is designed to be carried out every year for drivers who cover an average number of miles, usually considered to be around 12,000 a year or a thousand miles a month.
It really depends how many miles you cover over the year. If you regularly cover around 12,000 miles per year, or roughly the national average, you should probably look to book a full service every year.
However, if you regularly cover more than 12,000 miles per year, or you drive an older car, it may be worth having an interim service between each full service in order to keep your car well maintained and to help prevent any major components failing.
If your car is still under warranty, you’ll need to follow your
manufacturer’s service schedule
, which will include both interim and full services and is designed to keep your car in the best possible condition during ownership.
Once your warranty period expires, you can decide how often to service your car. It’s important to remember that regularly servicing your car helps to reduce the chances of major parts failing and your car breaking down.
