The All-New Kia Sorento brings new possibilities

Kia has released details on its all-new Kia Sorento. With deliveries for this new-generation model starting later this year, we thought it was time to showcase everything the Sorento has to offer.

Engine Line-Up

Just like so many new models currently being released, the all-new Kia Sorento is available with a petrol-electric hybrid engine, while a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid engine option will be available later this year. Plus since diesel still makes sense for a lot of people, the new Kia Sorento is available with the option of a diesel powertrain. Plus all new engines will come with four-wheel-drive for better handling and increased stability.

The entry-level new Kia Sorento ‘2’ model comes with the 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine with 59bhp electric motor and 1.49kWh battery pack. Power is delivered via a six-speed automatic gearbox for a combined output of 226bhp and 195lb ft of torque. Capable of 0-60mph in 8.7seconds it offers plenty of pep, plus thanks to 40.9mpg and just 158g/km carbon emissions you can motor on without worry.

The higher specification new Sorento model ‘3’ and ‘4’ come with the option of a new 199bhp 2.2-litre diesel mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. This manages 0-60mph in 9.1seconds and still offers good mileage capabilities of 42.2mpg and 176g/km of CO2. It is also the better option if you’re planning to tow with the Kia Sorento as it has a useful 2,500kg maximum towing capacity.

Finally, the plug-in hybrid engine which will arrive later will offer 261bhp overall, thanks to an 89bhp motor and 16.6kWh battery.

A Brand New Look

The fourth-generation Kia Sorento aims to rival the Skoda Kodiaq, so every model comes with seven seats, making it a fantastic option for growing families. It also adopts a fresh design that is distinctly different from its predecessor or any other Kia currently on sale across Europe.

The more angular styling of the new Kia Sorento mimics that seen on the Kia Telluride model available across America. The distinctive Kia ‘tiger-nose’ grille has been subtly reshaped and is flanked by new LED headlights. The wide lower air intake and air-channelling devices create a sportier look while helping enhance aerodynamic efficiency.

At the rear, the all-new Kia Sorento features vertically orientated brake clusters and a rear bumper which appears to house twin exhausts. Meanwhile, the addition of skid plates hints at the new model’s off-road capabilities.

Speaking of off-road capabilities the new Sorento also comes with a new Terrain Mode which allows you to maximise traction in varying road and weather conditions.

The new Sorento is built on an all-new Monocoque chassis with altered proportions which help to make it appear longer. In actual fact, just 35mm has been added to the wheelbase, although you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise given the vast increase to passenger space on offer.

Kia claims the new Sorento is the high-tech model it has ever produced, so we’ve taken a look at what the different trim levels have to offer.

The all-new Kia Sorento offers next-generation technology for more seamless commutes. Standard kit on the basic ‘2’ models includes stylish LED front and rear lights. A new digital instrument display ensures you get clear visibility of vital driving statistics. Meanwhile, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility helps to keep you entertained and connected. Plus with a full suite of active safety systems, the new Sorento offers heightened reassurance on your journeys.

Opt for the higher-specification ‘3’ model to gain more stylish exterior details. This includes 19-inch alloys, gloss black radiator grille, bi-functional LED lights and privacy glass. Inside is enhanced to thanks to electric leather seats with rear sear heating and a 64-colour mood lighting system to improve ambience. Comfort is improved too, with a new self-levelling rear suspension. Plus when it comes to tech, the ‘3’ model features Kia’s UBO Connect live telematics system with a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen.

The range-topping new Kia Sorento ‘4’ model is ideal if you are looking for the best of everything. Nappa leather seats with 10-way electrically adjustable memory seats, it offers greater comfort on-board. Plus with a panoramic sunroof, you can experience a greater sense of freedom and airier commute. A head-up display ensures you never have to take your eyes off the road ahead, while a new 12-speaker surround system for greater joy on journeys.

Enhanced driver-assistance

More importantly, though, the high-specification ‘4’ model comes with extensive driver assistance functions. This includes a new blind-spot view monitor which uses wide-angle cameras mounted on the door mirrors. They relay a video feed to the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, briefly replacing the speedometer if the driver indicates to change lane when a vehicle is in the blind spot. Kia claims the wider viewing angle offered by these intuitive mirrors considerably improves safety.

The ‘4’ model also offers a Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist feature. This function enables the car to pull itself back into the lane if it detects a crash is imminent if it did not act. On top of this, is a surround-view monitor and parking collision avoidance for hassle-free manoeuvres.
