How Used Car Finance Works

Finding the right second-hand car can seem like a daunting task, and you might not know where to start. We make buying a used car on finance simple. Here's how it works, step by step.

1. Find your used car

Browse our used car finance deals above. Use the filters to narrow your search by budget, make, model, body style, fuel type, and more. You start with the car you want, not the paperwork.

2. Explore your finance options

Check the second-hand car finance options. Use the calculator to explore how changing your deposit and agreement term could affect your monthly payments. If you have a car to part-exchange, its value can go towards your deposit.

3. Apply for finance

Once you've found the right car and finance option, you can start your finance application. A member of our finance team can then guide you through the next steps and liaise with the relevant lender.

4. Complete your purchase

When your finance and vehicle purchase are agreed, you can complete the deal and arrange collection. Our specialist team will be on hand throughout, so the whole process is straightforward.

"We are a credit broker and a lender. We can introduce you to a limited number of lenders and their finance products. We will provide details of products available, but no advice or recommendation will be made. You must decide whether the finance product is right for you. We do not charge you a fee for our services. Lenders will pay commission to us (either a fixed fee or a fixed percentage of the amount you borrow) for introducing you to them, this may be calculated in reference to a variable factor such as (but not limited to) the vehicle age, your credit score and the amount you are borrowing. Different lenders may pay different commissions for such introductions. Offers available to everyone over the age of 18, subject to credit approval."

Personal Contract Purchase is a popular way to finance a used car.

Personal Contract Purchase is one way to finance a used car. It can offer flexibility through lower monthly payments than an equivalent Hire Purchase agreement in some cases. Part of the vehicle’s cost is deferred to an optional final payment at the end of the agreement. A deposit is usually required, and at the end of the agreement you have three options:

  • Return the car, subject to the agreement terms and any applicable mileage or condition charges.
  • Part-exchange the car, subject to its value and any outstanding finance.
  • Pay the optional final payment to keep the car.

Hire Purchase may suit you if your priority is owning the car at the end of the agreement.

You start by paying a deposit. You then make fixed monthly payments until the full cost of the car is covered. Once all required payments and any applicable purchase fee have been made, ownership transfers to you. Monthly payments are generally higher than on a PCP agreement, as you're paying off the whole value of the car.

Eligibility and Application

Stoneacre can help you explore finance for a used car based on your circumstances and the vehicle you’re interested in.

Checking your eligibility for used car finance can give you a clearer idea of your options before you apply. This initial check is called a soft search, so regardless of the result it won’t affect your credit rating.

You will need to be over 18 and have a valid UK driving licence. You’ll usually need to provide some basic information so your application can be assessed by the relevant lender.

If you’re still browsing, checking your eligibility can be a useful step before choosing a car. It helps you understand what may be affordable and whether finance could be available to you.

Deposit and Part Exchange

Many used car finance agreements involve a deposit, although the amount required can vary. Typically the more you put down, the less you'll need to borrow. A larger deposit can also bring down your monthly payments.

If you already have a car, you don't need to find the cash. The value of your current vehicle can often be used towards the deposit through part exchange. Its value comes off the price of your next car, which reduces the amount you need to finance.

Part exchange is also a hassle-free way to move on your old car. There are no adverts to write, no calls from potential buyers and no waiting around for a sale. You simply hand over your old car when you collect your new one.
