New Hybrid Car Types
While electric cars are largely similar to each other, hybrid cars take on different forms to offer varied abilities and driver needs.
Mild Hybrids
- Use a small 48V battery and electric motor alongside a traditional engine
- The electric motor assists with starting off and acceleration
- Helps improve fuel economy without needing to plug in
Full Hybrids (Self-Charging)
- Charge their battery automatically while driving - no need to plug in
- Feature larger batteries and motors for stronger electric support
- Can operate in electric-only mode for short distances (typically a few miles)
Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs)
- Must be plugged in to recharge the larger battery
- Deliver significant electric drive support and improved fuel efficiency
- Can drive for dozens of miles using electric power alone
