The new Vauxhall Astra is a five-door family hatchback with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol powertrain paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The eighth generation of one of Britain’s best-known family hatchbacks has been freshly facelifted for 2026 with three trims available: Griffin, GS and Ultimate.

The Astra comes in seven colours, finished with a black roof as standard for a two-tone look.
Wheels step up as you move through the range. Griffin gets 17-inch alloys, while GS and Ultimate move to 18-inch designs, with GS finished in black and Ultimate in a diamond-cut style.
GS and Ultimate also add sportier bumpers, so the upgraded versions look a little more purposeful without changing how the car drives.

Designed for Comfort
The interior of the Vauxhall Astra has been redesigned with comfort in mind. The seats feature a shallow channel down the middle, borrowed from bicycle seat design, to take pressure off your lower back on longer drives.
Heated front seats and steering wheel come as standard, which can make a real difference on frosty school runs, with the Ultimate version adding a massage function for the front seats and heated windscreens.
The petrol Astra has a 422-litre boot, which takes a large pushchair and a full weekly shop together, or a couple of big suitcases for a holiday.
Fold the rear seats down and that grows to 1,339 litres, which is enough for flat-pack furniture or a bike with the front wheel off. The seats split 60/40, so you can carry a long load and still have a back seat for a passenger.
Ambient lighting is available on GS and Ultimate, with seven colours to choose from to set the mood.
Convenient Technology for a Focused Drive
Two ten-inch screens sit side by side across the dashboard, one showing your speed and one handling everything else. Sat nav is included on every version, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so your maps, music and messages appear on the screen without plugging your phone in.
You can also just talk to it. Say "Hey Vauxhall," and you can change the temperature, pick a song or set a destination without touching anything. On Ultimate, key information is projected onto the windscreen in front of you, so your eyes stay on the road.
Everyday Performance in the New Vauxhall Astra
The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine is perfect for everyday driving. It covers 0-62mph in 9.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 130mph, so it can pull away confidently from junctions and can easily join the motorway or overtake with little planning.
The new Astra comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox that changes gear smoothly to take the effort out of heavy traffic.
There are three driving modes. Eco stretches the fuel a little further on longer trips, Sport sharpens things up when you fancy it, and Normal sits sensibly in between.
Fuel economy is around 48mpg, which works out at roughly 500 miles from a tank for most drivers.

Vauxhall Astra safety
Automatic emergency braking is fitted to every Astra. It watches the road ahead for cars and pedestrians and will brake for you if you do not react in time, bringing the car to a complete stop at town speeds.
You also get lane keeping assistance, a warning if the car thinks you are getting tired, traffic sign recognition and eight airbags, all as standard rather than as optional extras.
Parking sensors front and rear come on every version, and GS and Ultimate add a wide-angle reversing camera that makes backing out of a tight supermarket space easier.
Ultimate has clever adaptive headlights that let you keep full beam on all the time. They dim only the section of the beam falling on oncoming traffic, so you see further ahead without dazzling anyone.
