2017 to 2020 Mazda CX-5: Earlier Second-Generation Cars
The second-generation CX-5 went on sale in the UK in June 2017, so these cars share the same design lineage as later ones at a lower used price. Mazda added more standard safety equipment, a petrol automatic option and a more powerful diesel for 2018. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard for 2019, which suits buyers who want phone navigation on a smaller budget. Trim names moved from Sport Nav to SE-L, Sport and GT Sport by 2020, so check each car's actual equipment rather than relying on the badge.
2021 Mazda CX-5: The Later Pre-Facelift Car
All 2021 cars gained a larger 10.25-inch centre display and revised Mazda Connect operation, so the cabin technology is noticeably newer without the cost of a facelifted car. Mazda also introduced the 194PS 2.5-litre petrol engine to the UK CX-5 range, which gives you a different petrol option from the 2.0-litre. It is still the pre-2022 body, not a new generation.
2022 Mazda CX-5: The Major Facelift
This is the biggest dividing line. The 2022 update brought new front and rear styling, redesigned lighting and clearer differences between trims, so these cars look fresher than earlier ones. Mazda also revised the suspension, seats and body structure to reduce road noise, and added Mi-Drive on relevant versions, which is worth comparing if you value motorway comfort. Newground trim first appears here, and it is not a different generation.
2023 to 2025 Mazda CX-5: Mild-Hybrid Era
Styling, cabin and chassis carried over from 2022, so a 2022 car is not automatically a step behind. The difference is under the bonnet: petrol versions gained Mazda's 24V M Hybrid system from the 2023 model year. It adds electrical assistance but is not a full or plug-in hybrid, so expect no electric-only driving. Trims became Centre-Line, Newground, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Takumi, so compare specification, mileage and condition rather than the badge alone.
2026 Mazda CX-5: The All-New Generation
The 2026 CX-5 is an all-new generation, not an update of the second-generation car, so it is a different proposition from the cars above. Trim naming’s have changed across the used Mazda CX-5 models, best way to find the trim that suits you is by checking the specification on each vehicle you are interested in.
The simplest of the Mazda CX-5 trims is the SE-L which has a straightforward specification.
Sport and GT Sport offer a higher-specification with a more premium sportier look and an upgraded cabin and equipment.
Newground has a more rugged look with more distinct styling, suitable for customers drawn towards an outdoor lifestyle.
Sport Black, which later becomes the Homura is differentiated by appearance rather than a higher spec for customers that want a more visual appeal.
The Exclusive-Line is a more equipment led trim for customers that prioritise convenience and comfort features.
Finally, the Takumi, which is the premium trim on later editions of the CX-5 for buyers wanting the most premium trim of the range.

Used Mazda CX-5 Engines & Automatic Models
Recent second-generation CX-5 cars come with petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid engines, manual or automatic gearboxes, and front- or all-wheel drive, so it helps to decide what matters most before you browse.
Petrol - The 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G is the most common petrol choice, and suits mixed everyday driving. A 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G is available on selected versions, which is worth comparing if you want the stronger petrol option.
Diesel - The 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D offers strong pulling power and is often chosen for longer journeys, though it is not automatically the cheapest option for every driver.
Mild hybrid - From the 2023 model year, petrol CX-5s gained Mazda's 24V M Hybrid assistance. It supports the petrol engine but is not a full or plug-in hybrid, so there is no electric-only driving.

Front-wheel or all-wheel drive - Front-wheel drive is common, with i-Activ AWD on selected versions. If you want extra traction, check each car's listing, because AWD cannot be assumed from trim level.

Boot Space & Everyday Practicality
The CX-5 is a five-seat family SUV, built with everyday driving in mind. Mazda quotes between 494 and 522 litres of boot space depending on powertrain and vehicle generation with the largest boot space coming from the latest generation.
Second and third generation models also include added flexibility with a 40:20:40 split so you can add extra luggage and still have space for passengers in the back.
From 2022 onwards the Mazda CX-5 introduced a two-piece load floor position making it more useful for heavy shopping, dog equipment and anything hard to load.

The 2023 update was the introduction of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for added convenience for everyday driving.
Higher trims could also include premium Bose audio, head-up displays, and parking assistance, for drivers looking for an upgraded CX-5.
