There are many variables that can impact the overall value of a car; however, the key factors dealers contemplate are the car’s age and accumulated mileage.

It’s important to remember, though, that when part exchanging, we will need to inspect the interior and exterior conditions of the car and have up-to-date documentation to give you the most accurate valuation, as well as to make the exchange of vehicles as seamless as possible.

A few factors can better your chances of a greater part exchange price:

Service history and MOT - A full-service history and MOT, ideally by the franchise, will be beneficial as the car has been looked after by a trustworthy and knowledgeable source.

Colour - This is not always a huge factor, but some colours of cars are more desirable than others and may result in higher used prices.

Extras - Optional extras can be costly in originally fitted cars. If your car has many features compared to other similar models in the used market, that can help your car to stand above the rest.

Documentation- As with many things, paperwork is crucial. If you have all the required documentation, it will make the transaction hassle-free - you can find out what documents you need here.

Patience - If you are wanting to sell your car fast with no trouble, you may end up with an unfavourable price. As the used market fluctuates, time can be your best friend to ensure you can get the best deal.

A few factors must be judged before offering a definitive price:

Modifications - You may have loved the changes given to your car, but when it comes a time to sell it on, these changes may not work in your favour. As a dealership, we will need to take into consideration whether future buyers will be happy with the modifications or if they lessen the value of the car.

Damage - As you pass on the car, you also pass on the responsibility of fixing it if required, whether that be chipped paint or any significant damage that needs repairing. This will alter the car’s worth and be factored into the final valuation.

Wear and tear - We never expect any used car to resemble a new vehicle in a part exchange; the odd mark or stain is bound to happen. However, if there are signs of expensive repairs and the need to restore damaged parts to make the car safe and compliant, the car will be worthless as a result.

Number of previous owners - If a car has many owners over a short period of time, we need to be concerned about whether the car is troublesome. Again, after inspecting the car we will always know more but this could also change the final offer price.

  • Can I part exchange my car with outstanding finance?

Getting a part exchange on a car with outstanding finance is very possible, indeed. However, there will be different approaches to this depending on the current status of your car’s finance.

If you’re looking to part exchange a car where the outstanding finance is lower than what the car is worth, then you’ll have equity to use towards your new vehicle. For example, if your outstanding finance is £5,000 but the car is worth £8,000, then you’ll have £3,000 to use towards a new car after we’ve paid off the £5,000 settlement figure.

However, if your car’s outstanding finance is £5,000 but the car is only worth £2,500, then you’ll be in what’s called negative equity. If you are looking to part exchange a car with negative equity, it is sometimes possible to work this value into the price of the car that replaces your current vehicle to cover the deficit.

Have enough cash to pay off the settlement value? Then you can settle the finance to make the car yours and then enjoy a straight-forward part exchange process.

  • Can I part exchange my car for a cheaper car?

It is entirely possible that you can part exchange your car for a cheaper one. If the car you are part exchanging is worth more than the one you are buying, and the finance is fully paid off, you are often able to use your outgoing car as a full payment for the new one and we’ll give you any difference in cash.

  • Do you guarantee part exchange?

We would never say we could guarantee part exchange on every car; however, we will at least evaluate any car you would want to part exchange. In the event that your car just isn’t viable to accept, we’re afraid we’d have to turn it down, but those circumstances are very rare and we’d always try at first to find a solution.
