What is MG IM?
MG introduced IM to European buyers as an Intelligent Mobility brand. It’s not a trim level or an options pack. It’s a distinct, fully electric range designed around how a car senses, controls, and connects with you.
Think of it as a premium, technology-led electric offering from MG. These cars are developed by IM Motors and sold through the MG network you already know.
IM Motors was founded in 2020 by SAIC Motor, Alibaba Group, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech. In English, IM stands for “Intelligence in Motion”.
SAIC is also the parent company of MG, which helps explain the connection. IM Motors builds the cars, while MG Motor UK brings them to you as the MG IM range.
The range currently includes the IM5 and IM6. Both are fully electric and sit at the premium end of the MG line-up. The rest of this guide explains what that “intelligence” actually does for you.
What Does Intelligent Mobility Mean?
To understand what “intelligent” means in the MG IM range, it helps to look at the principles behind it. These are Purposeful Innovation, Ultimate Performance, Safety Fast, and Elevated Experience.
In practical terms, they work together rather than in isolation. The wider MG IM approach brings together fast charging, responsive steering, driver assistance, safety technology and a connected digital cabin.
This is vehicle intelligence in action. IM Motors calls its approach a digital chassis. The car coordinates the powertrain, steering, braking and chassis control systems electronically, rather than treating them as separate add-ons.

Electric Range, Charging and Performance
Every MG IM model is fully electric, but battery and drivetrain options vary across the IM5 and IM6. It’s better to compare versions rather than use one figure for the whole range.
Range
MG rates the IM5 Long Range at up to 441 miles WLTP, the strongest figure in the current line-up. The IM6 Long Range offers up to 388 miles WLTP. Both are official test figures, so real-world range may vary with driving style, weather and road conditions.
Charging
MG says the 100kWh battery can charge from 10 to 80% in around 17 minutes on a 350kW charger under standardised conditions. These derivatives use an 800-volt architecture, while the 75kWh IM5 Standard Range uses a different setup.
Performance
If you want outright performance, the dual-motor derivatives offer 553kW (741bhp) and 591lb-ft of torque. Those figures show what’s available at the top of the range, but there’s more to MG IM than speed, with comfort and control playing a part.

Four Wheel Steering
Four Wheel Steering lets the rear wheels steer as well as the front, helping these large EVs turn more like smaller cars. Turning circles are 9.98m for the IM5 and 10.18m for the IM6, making tight spaces and everyday manoeuvres easier to handle.
Intelligent Comfort Stop
Intelligent Comfort Stop (ICS) is designed to make low-speed braking feel smoother and more settled. It softens the final moment before the car stops, helping reduce the jerk passengers can feel in stop-start traffic and making journeys more comfortable.
Hydroplaning Stability Control
In poor conditions, Hydroplaning Stability Control detects a loss of grip and responds automatically. MG says it can reduce drifting or sliding by nearly 80% compared with traditional electronic stability control (ESC), based on testing carried out by MG.
All three features use the same digital chassis approach. Steering, braking and stability systems work together electronically to respond to changing road conditions.
Driver Assistance and Safety
MG IM assistance systems support you with specific tasks, from parking to hazard awareness. You remain in control while using them.
One-Touch iAD
One Touch iAD covers four automated parking scenarios: Park, Pull Out, Kerbside Park and Reverse. The Reverse function can record and repeat a path of up to 100 metres, while you remain in control.
Rainy Night Mode
Rainy Night Mode uses the car’s cameras, sensors and radar to monitor the road in poor visibility. It then shows that information on-screen to help you see what rain or darkness might otherwise hide.
IM Advanced Driver Assist
The IM Advanced Driver Assist system uses cameras, sensors and radar to monitor the road around you. It helps detect hazards and supports your awareness while you drive in everyday conditions.
Euro NCAP awarded the IM5 and IM6 five-star safety ratings in 2025. The tested vehicles were left-hand drive, with the ratings applying to the listed right-hand-drive variants.
Smart Cockpit and Connectivity
The IM technology extends into the cabin, but it’s not simply about having more screens. Both the IM5 and IM6 have a 26.3-inch ultra-wide display for driver and infotainment functions, plus a 10.5-inch vertical touchscreen in the centre.

So, which MG IM model best suits your needs? The IM5 is the lower, sleeker executive-style model. It offers up to 441 miles WLTP on the Long Range derivative, with Standard Range, Long Range and Performance versions available.
The IM6 takes a larger SUV format, with a stronger emphasis on practicality and space. It offers a 100kWh battery across Long Range, Performance and Launch Edition derivatives. The Long Range version offers up to 388 miles WLTP.
Both offer rapid charging on 100kWh derivatives, four-wheel steering, advanced driver assistance and a technology-led cabin. Your choice mainly comes down to body style: a lower, sleeker executive-style model or a larger SUV with more emphasis on space and practicality.
