There is so much more to a Geely car than a modern badge and elegant body panels – it’s Geely Technology that lies beneath.

Geely Technology has dedicated European engineering hubs, working on everything from crash safety to hybrid engines.

Over 500 engineers, from more than 30 nationalities, are behind the technology in every Geely model.

This isn’t about one specific car. It’s about the engineering that shapes the whole range. So let’s take a look behind the scenes.

Geely European Engineering Roots

Geely doesn’t simply design cars in China and ship them to the UK. It has proper engineering teams on the ground in Europe.

There are two main hubs. One is in Gothenburg, Sweden, founded back in 2013. The other is in Frankfurt, Germany, founded in 2018.

Together, these teams build Geely cars for European roads. That means factoring in things like our weather, our motorways, and our driving habits. Not just adapting a car built for somewhere else.

This matters more than it might sound. A car engineered with British and European driving in mind tends to feel more at home on our roads from day one.

GEA Platform

At the heart of many Geely models sits something called GEA, short for Global Intelligent Electric Architecture.

Think of it as a shared foundation. One flexible platform that can support fully electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and range-extended electric vehicles.

It works across everything from compact SUVs to larger family cars.

Because it uses one flexible design, Geely Technology can add the same safety and efficiency benefits across its range.

This avoids rebuilding the core parts for every new model.

Geely bakes safety into GEA from the ground up, in a few clever ways:

  • A high-strength frame. In a collision, this spreads impact forces through multiple pathways, rather than letting them concentrate in one spot. That helps protect both passengers and the battery.

  • A tri-directional structure. This absorbs crash energy efficiently, achieving a 60% force distribution rate. In plain terms, it’s better at soaking up an impact before it reaches you.

  • Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology. Geely treats the battery itself as a structural part of the car, not just a component bolted underneath. A strong grid-pattern frame and extra buffer space reinforce it, absorbing impact energy.

Built-in Battery Safety

If you’re new to electric or hybrid cars, battery safety is probably on your mind. Geely has clearly thought about this too.

Its battery packs use an 11-layer design, including six layers of protection on the underside alone. That’s the part most exposed to road debris and impacts.

These packs have been through rigorous testing, including something called an eight-needle penetration test. This is an extreme safety trial for Geely Auto electric vehicle batteries.

Engineers drive multiple needles into the battery to check it doesn’t catch fire or explode. Geely batteries have passed this test with no fire, no explosion, and no leakage.

All this engineering adds up to something simple: strong, independently verified safety.

Every model from the Geely family tested by Euro NCAP has earned a five-star rating. This includes a Best-in-Class award in 2025.

That’s not a marketing claim. It is an independent result from crash tests. One of Europe’s most respected safety bodies ran the tests.

It’s the structural design, the battery protection, and the crash-tested architecture all coming together, and it shows up where it matters most: in the results.

Geely EM-i Super Hybrid System

EM-i Super Hybrid System

The Geely EM-i Super Hybrid system is where a lot of the clever engineering lives. It’s worth understanding, even if you never open the bonnet.

The headline figure is thermal efficiency of 47.26%. That’s industry-leading.

In simple terms, it means the engine turns more energy from each drop of fuel into movement. It wastes less energy as heat.

The result is better real-world efficiency in ordinary driving.

The system works across three modes, and it switches between them automatically:

  • Pure Electric Mode. The car runs purely on the battery. No emissions, instant response, and a lot less noise.

  • Hybrid Mode. The electric motor and petrol engine share the workload. This is where you get the best of both, strong efficiency and solid range.

  • Power Mode. Both the motor and engine work together for maximum performance, useful for overtaking or a spirited drive.

Behind the scenes, there’s an 11-in-1 E-DHT transmission, short for electric dedicated hybrid transmission. This means 11 distinct mechanical and electronic components, usually housed separately, are integrated into one compact unit.

It’s highly integrated, which helps keep weight down, and it runs at around 92% efficiency. In practice, that means less energy lost between the engine and the wheels, and more of it doing useful work.

Smart, Connected Software

Modern cars are as much about software as they are about the metal and mechanics, and Geely takes this seriously.

Its intelligent cockpit systems learn and adapt over time. This brings together connectivity, real-time data, and a smoother digital experience behind the wheel.

Geely delivers updates over-the-air, meaning your car’s software can improve after you’ve bought it, rather than staying fixed from day one.

Stability and reliability are central to this, because nobody wants an unpredictable update mid-journey.
