Changan technology is making waves in the UK. It brings over 40 years of engineering heritage. It has a design team spread across four continents. And it packs its cars with genuinely surprising tech.
Weighing up a Changan car? Or just curious what’s under the bonnet? Here’s a closer look at the technology and design behind the Changan range.

A Factory Built for the Future
Every Changan starts life at the brand’s Digital Intelligence Factory. It’s a staggering facility. The investment stands at €1.3 billion.
The site spans roughly 780,000 square metres. A new car rolls off the line every 60 seconds.
It’s known as the world’s leading all-area 5G digital intelligence factory. Efficiency and low-carbon processes were built in from day one.
The tech story doesn’t start with the driver. It starts long before the car reaches a showroom.
Backed by British Engineering
The Changan technology story isn’t purely Chinese. The brand has run a dedicated UK R&D centre based in Birmingham since 2010.
Its engineers focus on intelligent, low-carbon powertrain development. They’ve also expanded into full vehicle work, tailored specifically for European roads.
It’s a reassuring fact for UK buyers. These cars aren’t simply imported off the shelf. There’s genuine British engineering behind them.

Changan FORCE E-Drive 2.0
FORCE E-Drive 2.0 is Changan’s electric drive unit. It’s the motor, gearbox, and power electronics that turn battery power into forward motion.
The numbers behind it are impressive. It hits 92.59% efficiency in the electric drive assembly. That’s industry-leading. More energy reaches the wheels. Less gets lost along the way as heat.
Power density sits at 2.53 kW/kg. In practice, that means the unit is lighter and more compact than most rivals’, while still delivering strong acceleration.
Less weight to carry and more power on tap. Plus, because so little energy goes to waste, you get more range from the same size battery.
Golden Shield Battery: Built to Go the Distance
Range anxiety and battery degradation worry most EV buyers. The Changan Golden Shield Battery tackles both. It’s engineered for a lifespan of 600,000 km without noticeable capacity loss. Safety and stability standards are industry-leading too.
This is the quiet engineering that matters most. Not on day one, but years down the line.
Force Range Extender: Rewriting the Hybrid Rulebook
Not ready to go fully electric? The Changan Force Range Extender is worth a look. It’s a range-extender hybrid system. The car runs on electric power, but a small, highly efficient petrol engine sits onboard purely to top up the battery when needed. There’s no separate petrol drivetrain turning the wheels. The engine’s only job is to generate electricity, so it can be tuned for maximum efficiency rather than raw performance.
That’s exactly what Changan has done here. The system uses the world’s first 500-bar ultra-high-pressure fuel injection. A 150 mJ high-energy ignition system supports it. Thermal efficiency hits 44.39%. This is a genuinely high figure for any combustion engine. Energy output reaches up to 3.63 kWh per litre of petrol.
In plain English: the engine burns fuel more completely and wastes less as heat, so you get more electric range from every litre in the tank, alongside lower emissions.
The Changan Technology You’ll Actually Notice Every Day
The engineering matters. But it’s the Changan technology you touch every day that leaves the biggest impression. And Changan doesn’t hold back here.
The Rotating Sunflower Screen is the headline act. A 15.6-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard. It pivots to face you, or your passenger, if they fancy taking charge.
It’s a proper talking point on a test drive. It’s genuinely useful too, cutting glare or handing over navigation duties without anyone leaning across the cabin.

Augmented Reality Head-Up Display takes things further. Speed, navigation and safety alerts project straight onto the windscreen. It feels far more intuitive than glancing down at a dial. Your eyes stay where they should: on the road.
Gesture control and voice recognition bring a genuinely futuristic feel. Adjust the temperature or skip a track with a wave of the hand. Or just speak, and let the intelligent voice assistant take care of the rest. The cabin is highly responsive to your needs.
There’s more besides. Wireless phone charging. 360-degree camera systems. Panoramic glass roofs. Premium multi-speaker sound systems. All feature across the range. Cabins feel considerably more premium than the price tag suggests.

Design Philosophy: Where Culture Meets Innovation
Technology is only half the story. The Changan design approach is just as deliberate. It’s built around a “borderless” philosophy. This blends Eastern cultural influence with global design thinking.
This isn’t just marketing spin. Over 915 designers from 31 countries shape every model.
They work across four design centres: Chongqing, Turin, Yokohama and Munich. It’s a genuinely international set of eyes on every car, not a single regional viewpoint.
A Design Icon at the Helm
Since October 2023, Klaus Zyciora has steered that vision. The name will be familiar to anyone who follows automotive design. He’s spent over 30 years shaping some of the industry’s most recognisable models. As Vice President of global design, he blends European sensibility with Changan’s cultural heritage.
His approach treats design as more than aesthetics. As he puts it, design is the emotional foundation of the bond between user and car.
Why It All Matters for UK Drivers
The factory. The drivetrain technology. The British R&D work. The design pedigree. It all feeds directly into what’s sitting in UK showrooms right now.
The Deepal S05 and S07 bring the Sunflower Screen, Augmented Reality Head-Up Display, Gesture Control and the Changan wider tech story to British roads for the first time. Both carry a full 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating too.
