BYD ATTO 8: The New Seven-Seat Electric SUV With Ultra-Fast Charging

BYD is taking its electric SUV ambitions to a new level with the ATTO 8. Unveiled at the Paris Auto Show, this all-electric flagship combines seven-seat practicality, impressive performance and cutting-edge charging technology.

Due to arrive in European markets in the first quarter of 2027, the ATTO 8 will sit at the top of BYD’s growing SUV range. It promises up to 405 miles of WLTP range, a spacious cabin and a choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

However, its headline feature could be its charging speed. Thanks to BYD’s latest battery technology, the ATTO 8 can charge from 10% to 97% in just nine minutes under the stated conditions.

Here is what buyers can expect from BYD’s new flagship electric SUV.

BYD ATTO 8: A Large SUV With Serious Presence

Measuring 5.04 metres long, almost two metres wide and 1.76 metres tall, the BYD ATTO 8 is firmly in large SUV territory. Its proportions also give BYD room to accommodate seven occupants without abandoning everyday practicality.

The exterior introduces an updated interpretation of the brand’s established design language. Slim daytime running lights sit above matrix LED headlights, creating a distinctive front-end appearance. Angular bumper details add visual width and give the SUV a confident stance.

Along the sides, a pronounced shoulder line runs towards the rear wheelarches. Dark detailing around the C-pillar and chrome accents on the D-pillar help create a longer, more elegant silhouette.

At the back, distinctive ‘infinity knot’ tail-lights frame an illuminated BYD logo. A neatly integrated roof spoiler and carefully shaped bodywork complete the design, with aerodynamic efficiency also helping to support driving range.

The overall look balances sophistication with the visual presence expected from a flagship family SUV.

Two Electric Powertrains to Suit Different Drivers

BYD will offer the ATTO 8 in two all-electric configurations. Buyers can choose between a range-focused rear-wheel-drive model and a more powerful all-wheel-drive version.

ATTO 8 Design RWD

The entry-level Design RWD uses a single electric motor driving the rear wheels. It produces 462PS and 365Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0–62mph in eight seconds.

Power comes from a substantial 115kWh battery. The official WLTP combined range stands at up to 405 miles, making this version the stronger choice for drivers prioritising distance between charges.

That figure could make the ATTO 8 appealing to families who regularly undertake longer journeys. Actual range will depend on factors such as temperature, speed, driving style and passenger load.

ATTO 8 Excellence AWD

Drivers wanting stronger performance can opt for the Excellence AWD. An additional front motor brings the combined output to 775PS and 775Nm of torque.

This allows the large SUV to accelerate from 0–62mph in just 4.6 seconds. That is striking performance for a vehicle designed to accommodate seven people and their luggage.

The same 115kWh battery provides a claimed WLTP combined range of up to 374 miles. There is a reduction compared with the rear-wheel-drive version, but the remaining range is still substantial.

Both versions therefore offer different strengths. The Design RWD prioritises maximum range, while the Excellence AWD delivers considerably sharper acceleration.

FLASH Charging Could Change the EV Ownership Experience

Charging speed is one of the ATTO 8’s biggest talking points. The model is the first BYD vehicle in Europe to use the company’s second-generation Blade Battery.

This battery technology enables BYD’s new FLASH Charging system, which aims to make charging stops much shorter. The manufacturer quotes the following charging times:

  • Five minutes: 10% to 70% battery capacity.
  • Nine minutes: 10% to 97% battery capacity.
  • 12 minutes: 20% to 97% in temperatures as low as -30°C.

The final figure is particularly notable because extreme cold can significantly affect electric vehicle charging performance.

These times could make long-distance electric motoring more convenient, especially for drivers who want to minimise stops on busy journeys. However, achieving the quoted speeds will depend on compatible charging equipment and suitable operating conditions.

Infrastructure will also play a vital role. BYD plans to expand its FLASH Charging network to 3,000 stations across Europe by the end of 2027.

The ATTO 8’s charging claims are promising, but buyers should check the availability of compatible chargers along their regular routes. The wider rollout will determine how much of this potential translates into everyday convenience.

A Seven-Seat Cabin Designed Around Comfort

Inside, the BYD ATTO 8 focuses on space, premium materials and technology. A panoramic glass roof measuring 2.39 square metres helps bring natural light into the cabin, while soft-touch surfaces and suede leather details create an upmarket atmosphere.

The dashboard combines a digital instrument display with a large infotainment screen. Drivers also get a 26-inch widescreen head-up display, designed to present important information within their natural field of view.

The central touchscreen measures 15.6 inches and incorporates Google built-in. This brings access to Google Navigation, Google Assistant and the Google Play Store, helping occupants manage journeys and access compatible apps.

Comfort features extend across all three rows. The front seats offer heating, ventilation and massage functions, while the outer seats in the second row receive the same features.

Even passengers in the third row benefit from adjustable headrests. A dedicated rear air-conditioning control panel also helps keep the back of the cabin comfortable, supported by standard tri-zone climate control.

All seats use genuine leather upholstery. The emphasis is on making the ATTO 8 a practical family vehicle, rather than treating its rearmost seats as an occasional afterthought.

Storage, Entertainment and Everyday Practicality

Technology and convenience features continue throughout the cabin. The Design RWD gets a 10-speaker sound system, while the Excellence AWD upgrades to a 21-speaker DiSound setup.

There is also a front-mounted refrigerator that can cool items to -6°C or warm them to 50°C. Wireless smartphone charging provides up to 50W, while USB-C connections help keep passengers’ devices powered.

Practicality remains important for a vehicle of this size. The ATTO 8 offers 270 litres of luggage capacity with all seven seats in use.

Fold the middle and third rows, and the available space expands to 1,960 litres. A further 136-litre compartment beneath the bonnet provides useful extra storage for smaller bags and overnight luggage.

This additional front storage could prove particularly handy on family holidays, when the main luggage area fills quickly. Combined with the flexible seating arrangement, it gives the ATTO 8 the fundamentals expected of a large family SUV.

When Will the BYD ATTO 8 Go on Sale?

BYD expects dealer sales across European markets to begin in the first quarter of 2027. Pricing, detailed market specifications and availability will be important factors as its launch approaches.

For UK buyers, confirmation of local availability and pricing will help establish where the ATTO 8 sits against established seven-seat SUVs and emerging electric rivals.

Its combination of long-range capability, powerful electric drivetrains and rapid charging gives it an ambitious starting point. The spacious cabin and extensive equipment list should also appeal to families seeking an electric alternative to a conventional large SUV.

The real test will be how the ATTO 8 performs beyond the specification sheet. Charging access, real-world efficiency, ride comfort and pricing will all influence its appeal.

Is the BYD ATTO 8 Worth Watching?

The BYD ATTO 8 brings together several features that could make electric family motoring more attractive. Its seven-seat layout offers flexibility, while a claimed range of up to 405 miles should suit many longer journeys.

The Excellence AWD adds sports-car-like acceleration, but the Design RWD looks more suitable for drivers who value maximum range. Both benefit from the same 115kWh battery capacity and the promise of exceptionally rapid FLASH Charging.

Its cabin technology and storage options also suggest BYD has considered the practical demands of family life.

There are still unanswered questions about UK pricing, local charging infrastructure and real-world performance. Nevertheless, the ATTO 8 looks set to become an important addition to the expanding electric seven-seat SUV market.

With European sales expected in early 2027, it is certainly one to watch for families considering their next electric vehicle.
