More than 35 years after it first arrived, the Mazda MX-5 continues to stand out as one of the UK’s most accessible sports cars. With more than 1.2 million sold worldwide, its formula of lightweight construction, rear-wheel drive and engaging handling has proved remarkably enduring.
The 2027 Mazda MX-5 arrives in UK showrooms in January, bringing a series of carefully considered updates while retaining the character that has made it a favourite among driving enthusiasts.
The 1.5-litre Engine Becomes the Sole Choice
The biggest change for the 2027 Mazda MX-5 is the engine line-up. From the new model year, UK buyers will have one engine option: an updated 1.5-litre Skyactiv-G petrol engine.
Power increases slightly to 134 bhp, while torque rises to 114 lb ft. Mazda has also worked on the engine’s acoustics to enhance the sense of engagement behind the wheel.
At the same time, CO2 emissions have been reduced to 139g/km.
The 181 bhp 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine will not carry over into the 2027 model year. The engine was removed from other European markets in 2024 due to changing emissions regulations, but different derogation timings allowed it to remain available in the UK for longer.
That extended sales period has now ended. Mazda expects existing 2.0-litre stock to meet anticipated demand until around January, when the new model reaches dealerships.
While losing the larger engine may disappoint some enthusiasts, Mazda says the 1.5-litre remains at the heart of the MX-5. The current generation was developed around this engine, with its relatively modest output complementing the car’s lightweight construction.
New Homura and Homura Plus Models
For 2027, Mazda is also introducing Homura and Homura Plus grades to the 1.5-litre MX-5.
These versions bring a sportier specification, including 16-inch metallic black RAYS alloy wheels, red Brembo front brakes, red rear brake callipers and black mirrors.
Inside, Recaro seats are joined by black air vent surrounds and air-conditioning controls, giving the cabin a more focused appearance.
There are also changes aimed directly at handling. Homura and Homura Plus models feature Bilstein dampers and a front strut brace, marking the first time this specification has been offered with the 1.5-litre engine.
The wider 2027 line-up consists of Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, Homura and Homura Plus grades, with each available as either a Roadster or RF. That creates eight versions for UK buyers to choose from.
Zinc Green Metallic Joins the Range
The 2027 Mazda MX-5 also gains a new exterior colour: Zinc Green Metallic.
Mazda says the shade takes inspiration from zinc chromate primer, an industrial undercoat used to improve the durability of products. The result is a contemporary green designed to combine strength with refinement.
Green has also played a significant role in Mazda’s colour history, with the company having offered around 80 shades of green over the years.
For MX-5 buyers, the new colour provides another distinctive option for a car that has always suited expressive paint finishes.
More Safety Technology
While driving enjoyment remains central to the MX-5, Mazda has also added more safety equipment for 2027.
Driver Monitoring is now standard across every grade, while the range-topping Homura Plus gains further technology.
This includes Adaptive LED Headlights, Smart Brake Support Rear, Rear Crossing Alert, Vehicle Exit Warning and a rear-view camera.
The additions provide extra support for everyday driving without changing the fundamental character of the roadster.
Why the MX-5 Remains Different
The MX-5 continues to occupy an unusual position in the modern car market. It combines a compact body with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox, at a time when automatic transmissions are becoming increasingly common.
Mazda says the MX-5 is one of only three convertibles available in the UK for less than £30,000, and the only one of those that is a sports car. It is also one of only three mainstream roadsters available for under £50,000.
That helps explain the model’s lasting appeal. The MX-5 is not focused purely on outright performance. Instead, its lightweight construction, responsive engine and manual transmission are designed to create a closer connection between car and driver.

The departure of the 2.0-litre engine marks a significant change for UK buyers. However, the MX-5’s core formula remains intact.
