BYD UK today announces the launch of its ninth model in the UK – the all-new SEALION 5 DM-i. Starting from £29,995 on-the-road, this mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV offers exceptional value for families seeking efficiency, technology, and versatility.
Despite its advanced Super Hybrid DM-i powertrain, the SEALION 5 is priced competitively against conventional internal combustion engine SUVs. The DM-i system delivers lower running costs while retaining the flexibility and convenience of petrol power, making it ideal for everyday driving.

The SEALION 5 DM-i is expected to become one of BYD’s most popular models in the UK, strengthening a lineup that has already seen BYD emerge as the country’s leading New Energy Vehicle manufacturer in 2025. The model will be available in two trim levels, both offering a generous array of standard features.
Trims Available
The Comfort trim, priced from £29,995, comes well-equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and electrically adjustable, folding, and heated door mirrors.
Technology is at the heart of the SEALION 5 DM-i. All models feature a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen with Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, 4G connectivity, and BYD’s “Hi BYD” intelligent voice control. Drivers benefit from an 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel, ensuring all key information is easy to access.
Inside, the cabin blends luxury and practicality. Vegan leather trims the seats and steering wheel, while driver comfort is enhanced with six-way electrically adjustable seats, with four-way adjustment for the front passenger.
The Design trim, priced at £32,995, offers an even more premium experience with welcome lights, an electric tailgate, front parking sensors, a 360° camera system, wireless smartphone charging, and heated front seats. Both trims comfortably seat five passengers and offer generous rear legroom and headroom, alongside a 463-litre boot for family luggage.
BYD Powertrains and Exterior
Power comes from BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system, producing 212PS. A 1.5-litre petrol engine – with a class-leading 43% thermal efficiency – works with the electric motor to deliver the smooth, responsive feel of an electric vehicle while maintaining the versatility of petrol. The Comfort trim accelerates from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds, while the Design completes the sprint in 8.1 seconds.
Battery and efficiency are equally impressive. The Comfort’s 12.96kWh battery offers over 38 miles of pure electric range (WLTP), emits just 62g/km of CO2, and achieves a combined 104.6mpg. The Design trim’s larger 18.3kWh battery extends the electric range to 53.4 miles, reduces CO2 emissions to 48g/km, and delivers 134.5mpg. Both models support 3.3kW charging and feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, allowing owners to power appliances such as coffee machines or garden equipment directly from the car.
Exterior styling is available in four colours, with Atlantis Blue standard. Additional options include Obsidian Black, Time Grey, and Polar White at £850.
The SEALION 5 strengthens the BYD lineup by offering our most accessible entry point into DM-i plug-in hybrid technology to date. Its combination of meaningful electric-only range, outstanding efficiency, and everyday usability is matched by a starting price that compares favourably against many similarly sized combustion-engine SUVs. Crucially, it also delivers the advanced technology and high specification that customers expect from BYD.
