Let’s take a friendly dive into the world of the automotive industry in the United Kingdom. This exciting field isn’t just about cars; it’s a massive contributor to the country’s economy.

Stoneacre Academy Apprentice

In this vibrant sector, you’ll find vehicle manufacturers, parts suppliers, and service providers, all working together to create the amazing cars we drive. With the industry constantly evolving, and introducing new technology, there’s a growing need for talented automotive apprentices who have a handle on STEM subjects (that’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

These apprentices are the superheroes of the industry. They learn the ins and outs of cars through hands-on training and classroom education. They’re not just students; they’re the future of this ever-changing industry.

In this blog, we’ll explore what it takes to become an automotive apprentice. We’ll dive into the essential STEM skills you’ll need, show you the path to becoming an apprentice and share real-world examples of how these skills are used by our very own Stoneacre Academy apprentices.

So, if you’re thinking about a career in the automotive industry, we’re here to guide you and inspire you to embrace STEM education. It’s the key to success in this dynamic field, and we’re excited to show you the way.

The World of the Automotive Industry:

Buckle up, because we’re about to take a journey through the fascinating history and evolution of the automotive industry. It all started way back in the late 19th century, with the creation of the very first motor vehicles. From there, the industry transformed from crafting luxury cars by hand to mass-producing them with cutting-edge technology.

In the UK, the automotive industry has always been a powerhouse. It’s seen many changes, from iconic British car manufacturers in the 20th century to today’s global automotive giants.

The UK industry is now a hub of innovation, focusing on sustainability, electric vehicles, and autonomous driving technology.

This industry has always been about adapting and evolving, and it continues to do so today. It’s an exciting place to be!

The Role of Automotive Apprentices:

Now, let’s talk about those apprentice superheroes. Automotive apprentices are like the future champions of the industry. They’re learning the ropes from experienced pros, getting their hands dirty, and studying in the classroom. They’re not just students, they’re making a real impact.

Stoneacre Academy Apprentice

Speaking to McKenzie Leggett, a Year One apprentice technician, his journey started with his experience of being around cars and engines since he was born because his Grandad worked on Lambretta scooters. He enjoyed observing his Grandad’s work, and he thought why not do it as a career!

But having hands-on experience is not always essential. Damien Curtis, Year Three apprentice technician, also had a background in the automotive industry from a family member, “It all started when I was growing up and my dad worked at a Ford Dealer, in which he started as an apprentice at the dealership. That is where I began too, so it was like a family tradition. I also think it’s a good trade as well because I’ve learnt a lot of electric and plumbing skills whilst using the coolant systems, as well as the mechanical hands-on skills which are great skills to have for future development.”

Contributing Counts

During apprenticeships, the role of an apprentice isn’t just about learning; it’s also about contributing to their employers’ success. These students bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm and help the industry stay at the forefront of innovation. As Year Three technician Harvey Fane explains, “Technology has developed trust between customers and technicians, as we carry out digital vehicle health checks to show the customer the work we carry out, including any faults found and the car itself.”

“A digital health check is a process in which we video record the service, then we send this to our customers to prove what I have done to their car, increasing the trust between our service and them.” From his integrated knowledge of engineering and technology gained through his apprenticeship, Harvey has been able to service cars to a high standard for customers under the guidance of his mentor at Stoneacre Chesterfield.

All of the apprentice’s work helps maintain high standards, enhance safety, and provide top-notch service to customers. In a rapidly changing world, they’re keeping the automotive sector moving forward.

STEM Skills for Automotive Apprentices:

Now, you might be wondering what STEM has to do with all of this. Well, it’s a vital part of the mix.

Science

Science provides the foundation for understanding the physical properties of materials. Physics principles are vital for comprehending the mechanics of vehicles, while an understanding of chemistry is crucial for working with various materials and chemicals used in automotive maintenance. Furthermore, knowledge of biology is essential for safety procedures and the proper handling of hazardous materials.

STEM Day

Harvey Fane had to apply his knowledge of science when a customer had put dishwasher cleaner into the coolant system. He knew that antifreeze had certain chemical properties that when mixed with the dishwasher detergent, the liquid solidified in the engine. In the end, he was able to replace the engine block and coolant system, as well as needing to be flushed out to aid the car’s recovery.

Technology

Technology plays a pivotal role in the integration of cutting-edge features such as electric powertrains and advanced driver assistance systems. All of the apprentices spoke about the technology they had been taught to use during their apprenticeship.

For example, Year One Technicians Caleb Kelly and Bailey Leesing explained their involvement with minor services like repairing brake pads and exhaust manifolds.

Engineering

Engineering is essential in the design, structural integrity, and safety of vehicles, which Finlay Jarvill says comes with practice. “I have now learnt the torque specs of certain parts of a vehicle and how each torque spec has a different role, as well as how different tyres can affect different weather conditions”.

Nathaniel Tantrum has also a wide range of knowledge that can now add to stripping and rebuilding various vehicle systems, all through his apprenticeship.

Mathematics

Mathematics underpins all these aspects, from calculating precise measurements to assessing performance metrics.

Don’t worry if you’re not a STEM expert yet; that’s where apprenticeships come in. At Stoneacre Academy, you’ll learn these skills in a practical and fun way. It’s like learning without realising you’re studying!

Real-World STEM in the Automotive Industry:

Being an automotive apprentice isn’t all smooth sailing; it comes with its challenges. You’ll have a busy schedule, and you’ll need to balance work and study, but that’s where determination and good time management come in. And the rewards are worth it, as Max Stead, Year One Technician has appreciated in his time already.

STEM DAY Skills

STEM skills open doors to various opportunities in the industry, offering you a prosperous and secure career. Especially since the current year three apprentices are officially level three trained in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles, and progressing to their level 4!

Cameron Dunnington, a Year One Technician apprentice, especially noticed the integration of STEM into the changing automotive industry with the rise of EVs and Hybrids. As the Motor Trade becomes more advanced, the use of STEM is more efficient in your work and it can go towards harder jobs. “I can help out when jobs become more advanced the further down in my apprenticeship if I encounter Hybrid or Electric Vehicles.”

Steps to Becoming an Automotive Apprentice:

Ready to take the plunge and become an automotive apprentice? The path is well-structured and aligns with your passion for the industry. Start by exploring the opportunities at Stoneacre Academy on our website. You’ll find all the info you need about our apprenticeship programs and the application process.

Then, you’ll begin your journey to becoming a skilled professional in the automotive world. Stoneacre Academy is here to support you every step of the way.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to explore the world of automotive apprenticeships and STEM education. It’s a thrilling path to a bright future in a dynamic and ever-evolving field.

A final message from Aaron Sturman, a Year Three Technician and about to qualify, to anyone considering an apprenticeship: “The advice I would give is if you have a certain passion towards the mechanical area and the industry, you should always chase your dreams. Make sure you go for that and aspire to be the best you can be. Just know that it is going to be hard, but you will always achieve your goals and you’ll get to where you want to be so you can be proud”.
