BYD has taken the European market by storm. The electric battery specialists have been very successful as they take on the electric car industry. Now BYD is set to make Europe-specific cars that will be smaller than their Chinese counterparts.
The New BYD car range, starting with the plug-in hybrid Dolphin G, is set to be revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July, with the event aiming to show a clear distinction between European and Chinese cars. BYD vice-president Stella Li has highlighted “our goal is for customers to think of BYD as a European brand”.
China has become one of the most important regions within the automotive industry, as its innovative electric vehicle development and its ability to build cars at an affordable price point have been hard to ignore by the UK market.
Redefining Compact Cars in the European Market: Meet the BYD Dolphin G DM-i
With the first car of BYD’s new European car range set to enter the market in Autumn, little is known about the new Supermini.
We do know the car will be 4,160mm long, making it the smallest plug-in hybrid (PHEV) the UK has seen. Now smaller than BYD’s very own ATTO 2, measuring at a length of 4,310mm.
We will find out more on the 9th of July weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The Dolphin Surf EV sibling is tipped to be below the £20,000 range, an impressive price for a plug-in hybrid.

What Makes BYD’s New Car Range ‘Europe Specific’?
Other than driving on the right side of the road, what else could be different between China and the UK, right?
Turns out the Chinese love a bigger car, and BYD has been making cars for the Chinese market since 2003. So they have always made cars specifically for China.
It wasn’t until 2023 that the BYD ATTO 3 was first released in the UK and Europe. Since then, BYD has noticed one major thing: Europe needs smaller cars to tackle the major cities.
A bigger vehicle can be a difficult drive in London, Paris, and Milan. So European citizens tend to prefer smaller cars.
Apart from size, we’re yet to see what differences are to be made between BYD China and BYD Europe. It’s fair to say we are excited about the innovations coming from BYD.
European Expansion: From New Cars to New European Factories
We’ve yet to see past the Dolphin G DM-I in the new European range, yet BYD has released some exciting electric and plug-in hybrid cars in Europe.
It won’t be long until we see the first Europe-specific all-electric BYD catered towards the European market. If any manufacturer could create an electric Supermini, it would be BYD. With Blade technology and their impressive e-Platform 3.0, they are creating impressive cars with fewer working parts.
As BYD Europe differentiates itself from BYD China, we will also see BYD factories, with the first preparing to open in Hungary in the coming months.
With BYD’s growth, it won’t be long before we see many more, all ready to recreate the BYD classics into Europe-friendly editions of their most popular cars.
What to Expect from BYD in the Future?
While we don’t have all of the exact details for the Chinese battery specialists’ Auto department expansion into Europe. It can only mean one thing! More cars, More innovation, and world-leading EV cars right on our doorstep.
