Just when we thought Hyundai couldn’t surprise us any further, they’ve gone and revealed the CRATER Concept, a compact, rugged, adventure-hungry SUV that looks like it’s driven straight out of an off-road video game and onto the floor of AutoMobility LA 2025.

Here at Stoneacre, we love a good concept car. They’re bold, slightly bonkers, and often so packed with ideas that you can’t help but get excited about what might make its way into future models. And the CRATER Concept? Well, it’s ticking all the boxes.

Let’s take a look.

Built for Adventure – Literally

Hyundai clearly had explorers in mind when crafting the CRATER. You get practical off-road touches everywhere you look, including:

  • A modular roof platform for your equipment
  • Protective skid plates
  • Limb risers to deflect branches
  • Side mirror cameras that detach and double as flashlights
  • And our favourite: a recovery hook that doubles as a bottle opener

Exterior Design: Form, Function and a Bit of Flair

The CRATER’s exterior is where Hyundai’s designers truly flexed their creative muscles, creating a compact off-road SUV that looks both ready for adventure and surprisingly refined.

Its proportions have been intentionally kept tight and purposeful, giving it a nimble, confident stance that feels perfectly suited to narrow trails and uneven ground. Short overhangs at both ends enhance approach and departure angles, while the body’s upright posture reinforces its go-anywhere attitude.

Hyundai’s Art of Steel design philosophy is on full display here, blending crisp edges with smooth, sculpted metalwork.

The result is a body that communicates strength without looking overly aggressive, like someone who casually climbs mountains for fun but never brags about it.

Finished in a desert-inspired Dune Gold Matte with subtle orange anodised accents, the CRATER manages to turn heads without shouting for attention.

The roof platform is more than just a styling flourish. Integrated directly into the vehicle’s structure, it provides a stable base for equipment, auxiliary lighting and adventure gear, distributing weight evenly across the body.

Paired with limb risers stretching from the bonnet to the roofline, it adds a serious expedition-ready feel.

One of the standout elements of the design is the set of 18-inch hexagonal wheels wrapped in chunky 33-inch off-road tyres.

Their faceted, jewel-like surfaces echo the geometric theme seen throughout the bodywork, tying aesthetic and capability together beautifully.

Underneath, broad skid plates sit flush with the surrounding design to protect vital components while adding visual weight and stability to the SUV’s stance.

Meanwhile, the off-road lighting has been integrated directly into the roof platform and front-end architecture, giving the CRATER a cinematic, ready-for-anything glow, perfect for late-night trails or photo-worthy campsite arrivals.

Together, these details form an exterior that’s rugged yet considered, bold yet tasteful, and unmistakably built for adventure.

Interior: Rugged Meets High-Tech Calm

Step inside the CRATER Concept and you’re greeted by a cabin that blends adventure-ready toughness with modern calm. Hyundai has used a mix of durable materials, textured surfaces and subtle topographical patterns to create an interior that feels both functional and refined, the kind of place you’d happily spend hours exploring in.

Adding personality to the space is CRATER MAN, an animated in-car companion who reacts to different drive modes and settings.

It’s a fun, unexpected touch that gives the cabin its own character without distracting from the serious capability on offer.

Stretching across the front, the crash pad dashboard forms a strong, sculpted line that reinforces the interior’s sturdy, industrial aesthetic.

Its clean form is complemented by integrated ambient lighting, giving the space a balanced blend of ruggedness and sophistication.

Key information is projected onto the full-width head-up display, supporting Hyundai’s forward-thinking Bring Your Own Device philosophy, which lets your personal tech take the lead rather than relying on a traditional built-in screen.

The steering wheel adopts a squared-off profile, providing a stable, centred grip for more demanding off-road moments while keeping controls neatly organised.

Close by, the wraparound seats take comfort and control seriously, using sculpted side bolsters and three-dimensional padding to keep occupants steady when the terrain gets lively.

They deliver the right mix of support and softness, making them suitable for everything from long motorway stretches to rocky trails.

Around the cabin, thoughtful touches, including grab handles, an exposed roll cage, and a removable Bluetooth speaker, reinforce the CRATER’s adventurous intentions without overwhelming the clean, modern interior layout.

All in all, the interior feels purpose-built yet inviting, combining clever tech, sturdy materials and expressive design details to create a space that’s unmistakably ready for exploration.

Off-Road Tech That Doesn’t Mess Around

Beneath its stylish, sandy-coloured skin, the CRATER Concept is packed with genuinely capable-sounding tech features:

  • Terrain modes for Snow, Sand, Mud, and more
  • Locking differentials front and rear
  • Downhill brake control
  • Altimeter and compass displays
  • A multi-function off-road rotary dial straight out of a sci-fi film

While Hyundai hasn’t confirmed what’s under the bonnet (or battery pack), the design heavily hints at an electric powertrain. No engine grille, clean surfacing, and EV-friendly proportions… we think we can see where this is headed.

So, What’s the Verdict on the CRATER Concept?

The Hyundai CRATER Concept isn’t just a pretty design exercise, it’s a confident statement about Hyundai’s off-road ambitions.

If this is the direction future XRT models are heading, we’re all in for something special.

At Stoneacre, we love seeing Hyundai push boundaries. The CRATER is bold, imaginative, and bursting with character.

Will it hit UK showrooms exactly as shown? Probably not. But the ideas it introduces, from rugged capability to smart modular features, are likely to influence future SUVs.

And if Hyundai decides to include that bottle opener in a production model, we personally promise to celebrate appropriately.

Final Thoughts

The CRATER Concept is a love letter to adventure, and an exciting glimpse of Hyundai’s future.

Stylish, capable, and full of clever touches, it’s exactly the kind of forward-thinking design that gets us buzzing here at Stoneacre.
