Amazing Influence of Scents for All Seasons

11 Nov 2022 by Megan Maxwell

Think about the last time you were in a car. What did you smell? For most people, the answer is “nothing.” But according to a study from The Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, that’s not really true.

We all know that smells can affect our moods, but it turns out that they can also affect how we drive. According to the study, certain smells can make us more aggressive drivers, while others can make us more relaxed.

Did you know that the smell of peppermint can increase your alertness and productivity? Or that the smell of lavender can help you relax?

Scents play a powerful role in our moods and daily lives. In this blog post, we will discuss the different scents that can affect your mood, and how to use them to your advantage. We will also provide a list of the best air fresheners for each season!

So what are the best scents that complement each season?

Spring

As the New Year begins, many of us resolve to make changes in our lives. We may vow to eat healthier, exercise more, or spend less time on our phones. However, there is one change that we can all make that is easy and effective: freshening up our cars with a pleasant fragrance. According to neuroscientist and author of The Scent of Desire, Dr Rachel Herz, “scents have the ability to alter our emotions and moods more than any other sensory experience”.

For instance, the smell of freshly-cut grass has a powerful smell which releases chemicals proven to prevent mental decline. The scent is a mixture of oxygenated hydrocarbons called green leaf volatiles (GLV). It smells so good because we associate this with summer and weekends! You are smelling a mixture of oxygenated hydrocarbons that include methanol, ethanol, acetaldehyde and acetone, called green leaf volatiles (GLV).

Similarly, the scent of blossoms and flowers like lavender has been shown to reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Alternatively, rosemary amplifies brain power and boosts your memory. The aroma of rosemary has been linked to improving mood, clearing the mind, relieving stress and lowering cortisol levels. Rosemary is known to rapidly reduce cortisol levels (which helps your body respond to stress, regulate blood sugar, and fight infections) by simply just smelling it – alleviating stress in the body.

By adding a pleasant smell to our cars, we can start the new year with a spring in our step and a positive outlook.

We recommend: Febreze in-car Air Freshener – Honeysuckle.

Now, every day can be the first day of spring, thanks to the nectary sweet scent of Febreze CAR Vent Clip Honeysuckle. Febreze with Odour clear technology cleans away odours and leaves a light fresh scent in any car.

Summer

As the summer sun begins to warm up the earth, it’s a time we start to think about our next holiday. But before we start packing our bags, there’s one important step we can’t forget: getting our bodies and minds ready for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

One of the best ways to do this is by surrounding ourselves with summery scents that evoke happy memories of holidays past. Whether it’s the creamy scent of coconut sun cream, the zesty aroma of citric fruits or the comforting sweetness of vanilla, these fragrances can help to boost our mood and get us in the holiday spirit.

So as we begin to plan our summer getaways, let’s not forget the power of scent in helping us to relax, recharge and escape from the everyday grind.

Autumn:

As the days grow shorter and the weather turns cooler, many people find themselves craving familiar comfort foods and cosy scents.

The arrival of autumn brings with it a whole host of new and existing smells.

pumpkin cinnamon smell

With Halloween and Bonfire Night looming, now is the perfect time to add some seasonal scents to your car. You may be surprised by how effective they can be in helping with your well-being.

Spiced pumpkin is a popular scent of cosiness, with notes of cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. It can trigger warm feelings and is soothing and comforting.

Bergamot contains chemicals that stimulate bile production and other digestive juices, which aids the body in absorbing nutrients. It has disinfectant and antibacterial qualities which make it an effective deodorant.

Sandalwood has many benefits in aromatherapy. Its sweet, soft scent induces relaxation, reduces anxiety and promotes sleep.

We recommend: Happy Halloween Pumpkin Head Carving Car Air Freshener.

A spooky black and orange jack-o-lantern design to refresh your auto with different cool scents. This unique gift idea is great for friends and family who love Halloween and the autumn season.

Winter:

It’s time to get into the festive spirit and go for a Christmas-scented car air freshener to get you excited for this special time of year. Add in some Christmas tunes to sing along to and your regular commute will be so much more fun.

Pine is known to reduce stress which is great for calming road rage. It can create thoughts of a forest stroll which can decrease depression and anxiety.

Pine essential oil is also touted as having anti-inflammatory effects. In theory, such effects could do two things: ease symptoms of inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, and rosacea. It can also alleviate pain from related health conditions, such as arthritis and muscle pain.

When you think of Cinnamon, Christmas comes to mind as it is often found in tasty Christmas puddings and mulled wine. By targeting a brain chemical involved in glucose and cholesterol, eating cinnamon may decrease food intake and help you lose weight.

Cinnamon’s scent can boost memory in a task. A small human study suggests that merely smelling cinnamon can improve the performance of several types of memory tasks.

Ginger is another significant scent in aromatherapy. The energising scent of ginger is said to reduce fatigue and revive the senses.

As well as being used to ease nausea caused by travel sickness, chemotherapy or pregnancy, some people also believe that inhaling ginger may help to relieve pain brought on by arthritis or menstrual cramps.

We recommend: Little Trees Icon Car Air Freshener – Frosted Pine.

The smell of frosted pine needles, cool peppermint, and mountain lavender come together to create a crisp, snowy wonderland.
