2024 MG Cyberster Revealed

11 May 2023 by Megan Maxwell

At a special preview event hosted at the MG Motor UK headquarters in Marylebone, London, the pre-production design model for the Cyberster, the brand’s exciting new sports car, was unveiled.

Since the release of the MG F in 1995, the newly launched car, which debuted as a nearly production-ready concept at the Shanghai Motor Show last month, is the first sports roadster carrying the iconic octagonal MG badge to be completely redesigned.

The team responsible for its creation, Advanced Design Director Carl Gotham and his Marylebone-based team, marked the event as “a special moment for all of us who have played a part in designing this unique car. The Cyberster will offer MG customers a striking, all-electric roadster which will be as exciting as MG sports cars of the past.”

Cyberster set to be “affordable”

MG has stated that their upcoming Cyberster will be the first of its kind to be considered affordable, as it will significantly undercut the pricing of existing electric performance cars. The vehicle will be offered in two models: a rear-wheel-drive 309bhp version expected to start at around £55,000, and a four-wheel-drive twin-motor version with 536bhp estimated to cost around £65,000.

Despite being initially intended as a replacement for the MG TF, a more advanced version of the MG F, the Cyberster vehicle design had to be altered due to the necessity of accommodating a large traction battery, which in turn required a longer wheelbase.

Official debut pending…

There has been limited information released about the Cyberster car’s mechanical arrangement ahead of its official debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. However, it is rumoured that the lighter single-motor version will weigh approximately 1850kg, which is 750kg more than the MG TF. Additionally, the twin-motor model is anticipated to increase its weight by 135kg.

The MG brand’s eagerly anticipated return to sports car production is embodied in the Cyberster, a two-seater vehicle that brings the company’s legacy up to the present day with its high-performance, all-electric powertrain and contemporary interior that boasts a range of advanced driver technology.

The visually striking appearance of the Cyberster, created by Carl Gotham and his team of designers at MG’s design studio in Marylebone, incorporates several elements inspired by the company’s heritage. Among the signature design elements are a lengthy hood, a low-slung nose, and sleek, contoured surfaces. In addition, the Cyberster will include some unique and bold features such as scissor doors and a Kammback rear design.

MG hits high sales

The company’s sales figures in the UK have been on an upward trajectory for several years, with the company selling over 51,000 units in 2022, a figure more than five times higher than it was five years ago. However, the growth of MG vehicle’s presence in Europe has been even more remarkable. Although sales were below 1000 units in 2019, it is projected that they will reach 120,000 by the close of 2023.
