Seven-seater Mazda CX-80 unveiled

18 Apr 2024 by Sam Bisby

Mazda is back in the seven-seater game with its impressive new CX-80 SUV.

It is the latest model in Mazda’s ‘Large Product Group’, following on from the CX-60, and offers even more practicality and flexibility.

The CX-80 will be the most spacious Mazda ever offered by the Japanese marque in Europe – it is also tasked with taking the challenge to established premium brands with its high-quality cabin, elegant design and advanced drivetrains.

Practicality: Maximised

Key to the Mazda CX-80’s selling point is its ability to be so flexible within the cabin.

The CX-80’s rear third row of seats is of course a major part of this, allowing the car to offer a total of seven seats – however, this flexible approach doesn’t end there.

There are also several configurations you can option for regarding the middle row when ordering your CX-80:

  • Three-person bench seat
  • Two captain’s seats with walk-through space
  • Two captain’s seats with a fixed centre console

Mazda expects the full seven-seat configuration with the three-person bench middle row to be the best seller, but the additional options are there for those it suits in daily life with the CX-80.

Compared to the CX-60, the CX-80 offers an increased wheelbase of 250mm to accommodate more shoulder room, headroom, and hip point spacing. Meanwhile, front and second row couple distance measurements have all increased.

Advanced powertrains

The CX-80 will make use of the CX-60’s brilliantly enhanced engine options, which includes a very strong plug-in hybrid offering.

Combined with Mazda’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, the 129kW electric motor and 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery bring a potent mix of performance and efficiency.

Alternatively, the CX-80 is available with Mazda’s superbly smooth 3.3-litre in-line six-cylinder e-Skyactiv D diesel engine.

Whichever option you choose, the power will go through the CX-80’s capable all-wheel drive system.

Making it your CX-80

Mazda will offer the CX-80 in a total of five trims: Exclusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Momura Plus, and Takumi Plus.

Additional options packs, meanwhile, will allow for further customisation of the vehicle.

We’re waiting on full specification details from Mazda, but the CX-80 will be available with Alexa in-car voice control of music, air-conditioning, navigation and third-party apps.

A total of nine colours will be offered on the CX-80, including two brand-new paint options: Artisan Red and Melting Copper (both highlighted in the pictures displayed here).

On sale in 2024

Mazda has announced that the CX-80 will be available later in 2024, with an autumn launch likely.
