What is a saloon car?

A saloon is a classification that refers to the body type of a car. A saloon car is defined by having a low, sloping rear end with a deep enclosed boot space. They have a fixed non-convertible roof, with the capacity to seat up to 5 passengers depending on how many seats are in the back.

In North America, a saloon car is termed a sedan, which get its name from a sedan chair that was historically used to transport people in an enclosed box. A sedan takes its name from this device as it has a comparable structure of separated areas for the engine, passengers and cargo. This is referred to as a three-box design, with the engine at the front, cargo space to the rear, and passenger space in between.

In comparison, a hatchback is a much smaller car with only a two-box design: one box for the engine at the front and the second for the passengers and cargo stretching back to the rear of the car. An estate car also has a two-box design.
