Who can drive a Motability car? - Rules on adding drivers to Motability Insurance

A named drivers is any person who you nominate to drive your Motability vehicle. You can add up to three named drivers on your insurance policy as part of your Motability lease, which can be a member of your family, a friend, or career or a guardian. You are able to add two named drivers to your policy for free, but you will then be charged for an administration fee for adding a third driver.

There are rules and criteria that dictate who is able to drive your Motability vehicle on your behalf. These are in place to protect the scheme and ensure the vehicles are used and operated for the intended reasons.

Named drivers on Motability insurance must…

Live within five miles of your address – Your named driver must live within 5 miles of your home address, anyone who lives further away will be considered but only in essential circumstances.

Comply with age restrictions for drivers 25 and under – Drivers under the age of 25 are restricted to driving cars with an ABI Insurance Group of 16 or lower and that has a maximum of 120bhp. Adults younger than 25 are eligible to drive your Motability car, but they are restricted to what car they are legally able to drive so this is something you should consider when choosing your vehicle. Motability only permit one driver under the age of 21 to be insured on a policy, which can include the Motability claimant.

Not have any driving convictions in the last 5 years – No driver with outstanding driving convictions or disqualifications will be eligible to drive a Motability vehicle.
