FIAT explored a fresh approach to family motoring with the unveiling of its Multiplay concept at the Stellantis \u201cNight Before\u201d event. Revealed ahead of the Paris Motor Show, which started on 12 October 2026, the concept offered an imaginative solution to the changing demands of modern life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Measuring 4.45 metres long, the Multiplay combined the space of a people carrier with SUV-inspired character and the practicality of a pick-up. Its defining feature was an adaptable rear section that allowed the vehicle to change from a family transporter into a four-seat pick-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rather than previewing a specific production car, the Multiplay served as a research project for future FIAT ideas. It explored how one vehicle could handle school runs, family outings, sporting activities and the occasional need to transport bulky equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The concept also revisited FIAT’s long-standing interest in making the most of compact exterior dimensions. Its approach placed flexibility, everyday convenience and family life at the centre of the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Family Car That Could Become a Pick-Up<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Multiplay’s most distinctive feature was its C-pillar architecture, named \u2018Metamorfosi\u2019. This sliding rear module allowed the vehicle to switch between two substantially different layouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In its family configuration, the concept accommodated six occupants plus a flexible additional element called the \u2018Petsenger seat\u2019. When greater carrying capacity became necessary, the rear section could be repositioned to create a four-seat pick-up with an open load bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That arrangement opened up different possibilities for owners. One journey could involve carrying the family, while another could require space for bicycles, sports equipment or bulky items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The transformation also affected the rear spoiler. Rather than serving only an aerodynamic purpose, it rotated into an integrated bicycle rack capable of carrying up to two bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This approach reduced the need for separate accessories and showed how individual components could serve several functions. It also distinguished the Multiplay from conventional family cars that offered limited options for adapting their interiors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
FIAT presented the concept as an exploration of how vehicles could respond to changing demands without requiring families to own or hire different types of transport.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
Reworking the Spirit of the Original Multipla<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The concept drew inspiration from two important chapters in FIAT history. The original 600 Multipla arrived in 1956 and accommodated six people in a vehicle measuring around 3.5 metres long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Decades later, the Multipla introduced in 1998 continued that focus on clever packaging. It provided six seats across two rows in a body measuring less than four metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both cars challenged conventional ideas about the relationship between exterior size and interior space. The Multiplay carried that philosophy into a new direction, concentrating on adaptability as well as passenger accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its approach reflected the different activities families might need to fit into a single day. Passenger comfort remained important, but so did the ability to carry equipment or reconfigure the cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The concept therefore represented more than a styling exercise. It provided a testing ground for ideas about how future vehicles could become more versatile in everyday use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Cabin Designed Around Families and Pets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Inside, the Multiplay focused on making each area useful. Its flexible \u2018Petsenger seat\u2019 formed a central part of that thinking, offering a range of potential functions depending on the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The modular element could provide a mounting point for a child car seat, a dedicated place for a pet, a small table or additional storage. This flexibility gave the cabin a more adaptable character than a conventional fixed seating arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
FIAT also incorporated practical touches for travelling with animals. Part of the seat cushion could detach and serve as a lead, while a compartment in the door stored a folding bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Storage pockets, elastic bands and multifunctional fittings helped keep everyday belongings organised. These details showed how the designers had considered the small practical challenges that accompanied family journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The rear compartment also addressed the limitations often associated with third-row seating. Its layout could accommodate up to two children, or even an adult when required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That arrangement aimed to make better use of the available space while keeping younger passengers within easy reach of their parents. It reflected the concept’s wider emphasis on making the cabin work for different occupants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
A Relaxation Space Beyond the Journey<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Multiplay also explored how a car’s interior could remain useful when parked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its front passenger seat could transform into a lounge-style arrangement called the \u2018Sunseat\u2019. Facing towards the rear, the seat used the dashboard as a backrest, creating a chaise longue beneath the panoramic roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This feature offered a place to relax, read or enjoy the surroundings during outdoor excursions. It extended the concept beyond the practical business of getting from one destination to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Large windows and the panoramic roof helped bring natural light into the cabin. Generous glazing also strengthened the visual connection between the occupants and their surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Together, these details supported the Multiplay’s recreational focus. The cabin was conceived as a flexible environment for family activities, rather than simply a space for travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Italian-Inspired Colours and Practical Materials<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
The Multiplay’s appearance took inspiration from an unmistakably summery image: a watermelon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its bright green exterior recalled the fruit’s skin, while red and pink shades brought warmth to the interior. A soft pink floor and turquoise accents added further contrast, including a pixelated colour transition around the passenger and children’s areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The result gave the concept a playful character that suited its family-focused purpose. It also continued FIAT’s tradition of exploring links between exterior colours and interior design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Material choices were guided by practicality as well as appearance. Many soft surfaces used a single-material textile produced through a stitch-free 3D knitting process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That technique aimed to reduce waste while creating adaptable, comfortable surfaces. Waterproof finishes in the children’s and pets’ areas addressed the messier realities of everyday family use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dashboard featured a horizontal strip inspired by the Mediterranean horizon, where sea and sky appeared to meet. This visual detail connected the cabin to the concept’s Italian design influences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology That Blended Into the Interior<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Digital equipment formed another part of the Multiplay’s restrained approach to cabin design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rather than leaving a prominent screen visible at all times, the concept incorporated a hidden display into the dashboard. The screen disappeared from view when the vehicle was switched off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This allowed the dashboard to retain a cleaner appearance when digital functions were not needed. Technology became part of the overall cabin architecture instead of dominating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The idea complemented the vehicle’s wider design philosophy. Physical space, flexible components and digital functions were considered together, with the aim of creating an interior that felt less cluttered.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
What the FIAT Multiplay Meant for Future Cars<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Presented by Olivier Fran\u00e7ois, Stellantis Company Strategic Advisor, and Arnaud Belloni, CEO of FIAT, Abarth and Lancia and Chief Marketing Officer for Europe, the Multiplay marked an exploration of future mobility ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the presentation, Fran\u00e7ois symbolically handed the keys to Belloni, creating a moment that linked FIAT’s heritage with its ambitions for the years ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Belloni described the concept as an opportunity to investigate more useful, adaptable vehicles shaped around the changing needs of families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Importantly, FIAT did not position the Multiplay as a direct preview of a forthcoming production model. Instead, its transformation mechanism, modular cabin and multifunctional components demonstrated possible directions for future development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project also raised an interesting question for the wider automotive industry: could one vehicle do more without becoming larger or relying on additional accessories?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Multiplay offered one imaginative answer. Its ability to change configuration, alongside thoughtful features for children, pets and outdoor equipment, challenged the idea that family cars must always compromise between passenger space and carrying capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Whether or not individual features eventually reached production, the Multiplay demonstrated how flexible packaging and people-focused design could broaden a vehicle’s usefulness. Its central idea was straightforward: a family car could be more than transport, adapting to the varied demands of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
