BYD<\/a> is back with another plug-in hybrid option, and this time, they\u2019re trying out something new. Their first pickup truck is the BYD Shark. Sticking with the ocean theme, the BYD Shark is aptly named. The 5.5-metre five-seat double cab pickup is set to be released in Q4 (between October and December). It will cost in the region of \u00a347,290, including VAT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BYD has proven to be successful with Super Hybrid technology. As seen with the BYD Seal U DM-I<\/a> with the super safe Blade battery<\/a> and e-Platform 3.0. This has helped solidify BYD\u2019s popularity in the UK market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super Hybrid Technology with a Dual Mode Off-Road Powertrain<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The new BYD Shark will have a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine as standard. This acts as a generator for the electric motors for an EV’s first driving experience. You get a smooth, quiet experience with instant torque even when the petrol engine is running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two electric motors give the car a permanent all-wheel drive for better stability on slippery roads or when pulling away with a loaded bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new pickup by BYD will be able to go from 0-62mph in just 5.7secs. This is a great pace for a 2.7-tonne truck and far faster than most diesel pickups. This means overtaking and merging will be effortless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Shark will also have four automatic driving modes. This means this cool pickup truck will aim to run as efficiently as possible. This cuts the cost of petrol and saves as much electric range as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electric Range, Economy & Charging<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A pickup with plug-in technology is nothing new, but BYD has gone bigger and better with its iteration. It has a 32.2kWh Blade battery. Nearly triple the size of any other plug-in pickup truck, meaning you get longer commutes on all-electric power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BYD Shark will have 55 miles of pure-electric range, perfect for local commutes, while still being backed up by a petrol engine. This gives you a total of 419 miles on a full tank with a full battery. This is the perfect all-rounder for long-haul drives and city commutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fuel economy of the BYD Shark is 80.7mpg WLTP Weighted, and even on an empty battery, the BYD Shark still manages 29.4mpg. Even on a bad day, it matches a Diesel pickup truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charging a BYD SHARK takes no time at all, with the 55kw DC rapid chargers taking just 21 minutes to get from 30% to 80%. When charging at home, a standard 11kW AC can do 15% to 100% in 3.2 hours, easily filling the battery overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With pickup trucks being taxed as cars, the BYD Shark can save company car drivers thousands in taxes each year. With a 23g\/km CO2, putting it in the 10% BIK band, with the average diesel pickup truck sitting at a maximum 37%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This pickup is great for drivers wanting to make the switch to electric but worry about running low on battery. With quick charging and a backup petrol tank, this car could save drivers thousands without hindering their commutes in any way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BYD Shark Towing & Off-Road Capabilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BYD Shark is built on a ladder-frame chassis with the Blade battery built directly into the structure. This gives you the tough construction you’d expect from a proper pickup while keeping the battery protected from knocks and scrapes when driving off-road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Towing is covered too, with a braked towing capacity of 2,500kg, which is more than enough for a large caravan, horsebox, or plant trailer. The load bed offers 1,200 litres of space with a 790kg payload, plenty for tools, materials, or a weekend’s worth of camping gear and bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the BYD Shark really shines is off the tarmac. The intelligent all-wheel drive system comes with four terrain modes covering sand, mud, snow, and gravel, so the truck adjusts how power reaches each wheel depending on the surface. You don’t need to be an off-roading expert, just pick the mode and go. Hill Descent Control also comes as standard, taking the stress out of steep or slippery descents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike most pickups that use basic leaf spring suspension, the BYD Shark gets double wishbone suspension front and rear. In simple terms, that means it rides more like an SUV on the road while still being able to handle rough ground with ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fully Loaded with Tech Inside & Out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BYD Shark keeps things simple with just one fully loaded trim level. No spec sheet homework and no finding out the feature you wanted costs \u00a32,000 extra; every Shark comes with everything as standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, you get a 15.6-inch touchscreen, the largest in any pickup. This includes built-in nav, voice assistant, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can access your maps, music, and calls. A 10.25-inch digital driver display and head-up display keep your speed and directions in your eyeline so your eyes stay on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comfort hasn’t been forgotten either. Heated and ventilated front seats in wipe-clean vegan leather keep you warm on frosty mornings and cool in summer. A 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, wireless phone charging, and keyless entry and start add the everyday conveniences pickups normally skip. You can even defrost or cool the cab from your kitchen using the BYD app before you set off. And with a 360-degree camera plus front and rear parking sensors, parking a 5.5-metre truck is far less stressful than it sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rear passengers do well too. A fully flat floor, plenty of legroom, and a reclined seat-back make the back of the Shark feel closer to a full-size SUV, so it genuinely works as family transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the standout features is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). The Shark can pump out 6.6kW of power through two sockets, one on the charging port and one built into the load bed wall. That means you can run power tools on a site with no mains hookup, or plug in a coffee machine or power washer. It’s essentially a mobile generator without the noise or fuel costs, and 6.6kW is enough to run several tools at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
