Well, for most commuters, it seems this futuristic fantasy still provokes more anxiety than excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our recent survey diving into how people would spend their newfound free time in fully automated cars has revealed some fascinating insights about our collective trust (or lack thereof) in self-driving technology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results might just pump the brakes on predictions about when autonomous vehicles will truly become mainstream.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Survey Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked respondents: &#8220;<strong>Imagine your daily commute in a fully autonomous vehicle that requires no driver attention. How would you most likely spend your new free time during journeys<\/strong>?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results were enlightening:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>59 respondents<\/strong> (32.4%) said they &#8220;wouldn&#8217;t feel comfortable riding in a fully autonomous vehicle&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>56 people<\/strong> (30.8%) would stay &#8220;alert and monitoring the roads anyway&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>15 respondents<\/strong> (8.2%) would enjoy &#8220;movies, TV shows or gaming&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>15 people <\/strong>(8.2%) would connect &#8220;with friends or family through calls or messages&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>13 respondents<\/strong> (7.1%) would read &#8220;books or articles&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>11 people<\/strong> (6%) would &#8220;catch up on sleep or rest&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>6 respondents<\/strong> (3.3%) would &#8220;get ahead on work tasks&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>4 people<\/strong> (2.2%) would practice<strong> <\/strong>&#8220;hobbies (knitting, learning a language, etc.)&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>3 respondents<\/strong> (1.6%) selected &#8220;other&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Automated Cars: Trust Remains the Biggest Hurdle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stoneacre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/riding-in-a-automonous-car.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18707 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stoneacre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/riding-in-a-automonous-car.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.stoneacre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/riding-in-a-automonous-car-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Perhaps the most striking finding is that over<strong> 63% of respondents either wouldn&#8217;t feel comfortable in self-automated cars at all or would still monitor the roads despite the promise of full autonomy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This suggests a significant trust gap that manufacturers and technology companies must address before autonomous cars take over our roadways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This scepticism isn&#8217;t entirely surprising. Despite rapid advancements in car automation technology, high-profile automated driving car accidents have received substantial media coverage, reinforcing safety concerns among the public.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fully Automated Cars: The Promise of Reclaimed Time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who would trust autonomous cars, the survey highlights some benefits of automated cars: the most popular activities would be entertainment (movies, gaming), socialising (connecting with friends and family), and relaxation (reading, sleeping). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These preferences demonstrate the potential quality-of-life improvements that fully automated cars could deliver by transforming commute time from a stressful necessity into productive or enjoyable hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Automated Cars Pros and Cons: Productivity Takes a Backseat<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stoneacre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/working-in-a-car.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18757 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stoneacre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/working-in-a-car.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.stoneacre.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/working-in-a-car-300x167.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Interestingly, only a small percentage of respondents (3.3%) would use their commute time for work tasks in automated self-driving cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This contradicts the common narrative that one of the key benefits of automated cars will be increased productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the results suggest that people value the potential for autonomous vehicles to enable leisure and connection more than work opportunities.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As technology advances and safety records of autonomous cars improve, we may see shifting attitudes in future surveys.
