Damien Curtis, Year Three apprentice technician, also had a background in the automotive industry from a family member, \u201cIt all started when I was growing up and my dad worked at a Ford Dealer, in which he started as an apprentice at the dealership. That is where I began too, so it was like a family tradition. I also think it\u2019s a good trade as well because I\u2019ve learnt a lot of electric and plumbing skills whilst using the coolant systems, as well as the mechanical hands-on skills which are great skills to have for future development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n During apprenticeships, the role of an apprentice isn’t just about learning; it’s also about contributing to their employers’ success. These students bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm and help the industry stay at the forefront of innovation. As Year Three technician Harvey Fane explains, \u201cTechnology has developed trust between customers and technicians, as we carry out digital vehicle health checks to show the customer the work we carry out, including any faults found and the car itself.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n “A digital health check is a process in which we video record the service, then we send this to our customers to prove what I have done to their car, increasing the trust between our service and them.\u201d From his integrated knowledge of engineering and technology gained through his apprenticeship, Harvey has been able to service cars to a high standard for customers under the guidance of his mentor at Stoneacre Chesterfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All of the apprentice\u2019s work helps maintain high standards, enhance safety, and provide top-notch service to customers. Well, it’s a vital part of the mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Science provides the foundation for understanding the physical properties of materials. Physics principles are vital for comprehending the mechanics of vehicles, while an understanding of chemistry is crucial for working with various materials and chemicals used in automotive maintenance. Furthermore, knowledge of biology is essential for safety procedures and the proper handling of hazardous materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Harvey Fane had to apply his knowledge of science when a customer had put dishwasher cleaner into the coolant system. He knew that antifreeze had certain chemical properties that when mixed with the dishwasher detergent, the liquid solidified in the engine. In the end, he was able to replace the engine block and coolant system, as well as needing to be flushed out to aid the car’s recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Technology plays a pivotal role in the integration of cutting-edge features such as electric powertrains and advanced driver assistance systems. All of the apprentices spoke about the technology they had been taught to use during their apprenticeship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For example, Year One Technicians Caleb Kelly and Bailey Leesing explained their involvement with minor services like repairing brake pads and exhaust manifolds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Engineering is essential in the design, structural integrity, and safety of vehicles, which Finlay Jarvill says comes with practice. \u201cI have now learnt the torque specs of certain parts of a vehicle and how each torque spec has a different role, as well as how different tyres can affect different weather conditions\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Nathaniel Tantrum has also a wide range of knowledge that can now add to stripping and rebuilding various vehicle systems, all through his apprenticeship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mathematics underpins all these aspects, from calculating precise measurements to assessing performance metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Don’t worry if you’re not a STEM expert yet; that’s where apprenticeships come in.
