Suzuki has released details on its flagship plug-in hybrid SUV, the Suzuki Across. It marks the first vehicle released as part of the Sukuzi and Toyota alliance; an alliance created specifically for the electrification of the marque’s models.
A bold look for the new Suzuki Across
The influence of Toyota is clear from the Rav 4-esque look of the new Suzuki Across. However, subtle style details and Suzuki characteristics ensure it stands out with bold yet sporty confidence.
Suzuki’s trademark front grille dominates the front aspect and complements the characteristic chunky wheel arches. While new front and rear bumpers and impressive 19-inch alloy wheels create a robust stance.
Distinctive LED headlamps and taillights ensure the Across has a unique aspect which helps to set it apart from the Rav 4. The LED headlamps feature a bi-beam projector combining both high and low beam, while the LED daytime running lights ensure optimum visibility.
Available in six different paint colours; white, silver, black, red, grey and blue it has both city and country appeal.
Arguably the most defining feature of Suzuki’s newest SUV is the plug-in hybrid powertrain. Combining a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, an 18.1kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor mounted on each axle it offers 180bhp, 270Nm torque and a top speed of 112mph. For those looking for a car with lower emissions, the Across performs pretty impressively with just 22g/km co2 on a WLTP cycle.
With 46 miles all-electric range it is suitable for most people to manage electric commuting day-to-day. Plus even in the fully-electric mode, it offers flexibility for motorway travel with an all-electric top speed of 84mph.
A range of driver profiles allows you to operate the new Suzuki Across in a way that suits your driving style. EV mode offers fully electric motoring, while EV/HV mode draws on the engine when extra power is needed, like when pulling away from a junction. For that extra boost, you can select HV mode which prioritises power even more.
The final setting ‘battery charger’ mode conserves battery charge for use later in the journey effectively topping up the battery pack without you having to stop at a charging station.
Known for their off-road prowess the new Across does not disappoint. Fixing an electric motor to each wheel allows variation in the torque ratio between the front and rear axle. This translates on or off the road, as greater stability on slippery surfaces and improved cornering.
A dedicated Trail setting is on offer and can manipulate the car’s differential and braking system to deliver enhanced off-road performance. It cleverly adjusts power to the wheels, sending more power to wheels with more grip and applying the brakes on the wheel losing traction. While simultaneously adjusting the throttle and gearbox shift pattern to ensure you keep moving when the going gets tough.
Looking after those on board
Safety is a key component for many buying a new car and Suzuki has ensured the Across is equipped with the latest technology. The active cruise control will automatically control the throttle response and braking in start-stop traffic while functions like road-sign assist and blind-spot monitoring provide extra support on every journey.
Spacious & connected
While the new Suzuki Across may be robust and more than capable off-road, the interior offers a heightened sense of comfort and luxury. Well-crafted upholstery makes journeys more comfortable while softly padded dash and door trims give the cabin a more upmarket edge.
A multifunction steering wheel allows you to access a range of the car’s functions with ease. While the nine-inch touchscreen which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allows you to stay connected on every journey.
It doesn’t lack space either with a 490-litre boot capacity there is room for a whole host of equipment from luggage to camping paraphernalia. The boot also features an electrical accessory socket. The cabin itself offers further storage with decent sized door bins and well-placed cupholders.
