Igniting Driving Passion - The New Ford Focus ST

By: Lisa Harper

Exciting times are ahead! Ford has released information on the brand new Ford Focus ST, which is set to arrive in showrooms towards the end of summer. Available in hatchback and estate form it brings a whole new dynamic to the Focus.

Two new outputs powering the way!

With 0-62mph achievable in less than six seconds, the new Ford Focus ST directly rivals other hot hatches like the Renault Megane R.S. Hyundai i30N and the Honda Civic Type R. This is thanks to two new engine options.

A 2.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the same unit found in the Ecoboost Mustang and an uprated form of the engine found in the latest generation RS, delivers 280hp at 5,500rpm alongside 310lb torque between 3,000-4,000rpm.

While for those who prefer diesel power the 2-litre diesel engine, the most powerful diesel ever seen in a Focus will come with 190bhp at 3,500rpm and 295lb ft torque between 2,000-3,000rpm.

Either way, drive is sent to the front axle via either a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Enhanced Traction Control

For enhanced handling, the petrol engine will come with an electronic limited slip differential developed by Borg Warner. It uses a suite of sensors to pre-emptively adjust torque distribution by up to one hundred per cent of the available torque to whichever wheel has the most traction.

The diesel meanwhile, gets a torque vectoring control system which applies the brakes individually to the inside wheels during cornering.

New Ford Focus ST Innovation

The new Ford Focus ST also gets a fresh exhaust system, a bespoke air intake and an optimised intercooler. The inclusion of larger front and rear brakes are claimed to boost fade resistance by up to four times on the previous generation Focus ST. While the bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres should make sure you get a level of grip that matches the cars enhanced power and agility.

Ride height has been lowered by 10mm for added dynamism, while the damping stiffness has been increased by 20 per cent at the front and 13 per cent at the rear. Steering is also 15 per cent faster than a standard Focus too, with only two turns lock-to-lock.

The estate version will have a slightly different setup to account for the extra weight it is likely to carry.

Fired-up ride

The new Focus ST is available with a Ford-GT based anti-lag system. This keeps the throttle open, even when the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator to maintain pressure to the turbo helping improve response.

While the option of a performance pack increases the performance on offer. With it, you gain rev-matching as well as launch control, shift light, track mode and Ford’s continuously controlled damping which monitors suspension, body steering and braking inputs.

Daily Drive

For day-to-day practicality, the brand new Focus ST will feature adaptive cruise control, Active Park Assist 2 and a Head-Up Display so life on the move is less stressful. What's more, a series of selectable drive modes including 'Sport', are available at the flick of a switch, so you can drive the way you desire.

Sporting style

Style –wise the new Focus ST remains similar to the previous generation model but gains a revised front grille, already seen on the Fiesta ST and a bigger, more angled rear spoiler. This is alongside the option of either 18” ‘Dark Sparkle’ or 19” ‘Magnetite’ alloy wheels both of which add instant appeal.

A range of distinctive colours including Ford Performance Blue, Orange Fury, Frozen White and Race Red will ensure it stands out and ignites a sense of pure driving passion.

Inside the Recaro sports seats offer a more supportive ride, while the aluminium pedals, flat-bottomed sports steering wheel, metal flourishes and grey stitching add a sporty edge to the interior.

There’s no missing out on the latest connectivity either with the new Focus ST coming with Ford’s latest SYNC 3 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
