On the roads for around eight years now our next car has learnt a thing or two about what it takes to become a fantastic affordable performance car:
- 1.6-litre THP 272bhp engine
- 6-speed manual transmission
- 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds
- Top Speed 155mph
- Approximately 47.1mpg
- 139g/km of CO2
- 19” ‘Carbone’ lightweight two tone diamond cut wheels
The Peugeot 308 GTi was designed to meet the demands of those who want an exhilarating driving experience.
Peugeot has been associated with fun, reasonably priced performance cars for some time, so it will come as no surprise to many that a Peugeot made our list of affordable performance cars. The latest 308 GTi was designed to restore the brands once legendary reputation amongst petrol heads, so how does it fare?
The Peugeot 308 GTi has been described as the ultimate compact sports car. Acceptably youthful but with grown-up practicality we’re confident that it will reignite your passion for driving.
The 1.6-litre THP 272bhp engine certainly doesn’t lack oomph and is capable of producing a fun responsive drive. It’s the same engine found in the RCZ R, but it has been updated to give it a broader spread of torque and improved high-range power-delivery, making 0-62mpph easily achievable within six seconds. This ensures the car pulls away keenly and delivers a strong progressive power. While the six-speed transmission allows you to stay in full control for seamless gear changes.
However what’s really impressive about the 308 GTi engine is its efficiency. For a hot hatch to return 47.1mpg and a mere 139g/km is unheard of and puts the Peugeot 308 GTi above many of its rivals in this respect.
Benefiting from quick to respond steering you’ll find cornering a breeze. Plus the taut chassis with Peugeot’s trademark suppleness ensures great ride comfort even on undulating British roads.
Every detail internally and externally has been meticulously finished to provide unmistakable sharp Peugeot DNA. The distinctive gloss-black chequered radiator grille stands proud of the re-profiled front bumper. Speaking of the bumper, you’re sure to notice it given its stand out contrasting finisher. It adds instant sports styling to the vehicle, ensuring it’s totally recognisable from the less sporty 308.
You can make a style statement with the optional exclusive Coupe Franche (clean cut) paint colour. Hand finished you can opt for either Magnetic Blue or Ultimate Red colour, both of which are finished with a unique Nera Black metallic rear.
Ride height has been lowered by 11mm, with the Peugeot 308 GTi riding on 19” Carbone lightweight two-tone diamond cut wheels. While the dual exhaust system and gloss black diffuser gives a hint to the performance this car offers. The 308 GTi is finished off with sporty red painted Peugeot Sport brake callipers with 380mm front Alcon discs and Torsen limited slip differential.
Inside the sports styling continues, with the 308 GTi getting remarkably comfortable bucket seats which feature a massage function with two intensity settings. They are styled in alcantara with contrast stitching. The 308 GTi benefits from Peugeot’s i-cockpit which puts you firmly in control of the car. While stylish GTi branding can be found on the door sills and offers a subtle finish to the interior.
The 308 GTi has the requisite ‘sports mode’ which can be accessed at the touch of a button. Switching to ‘Sport’ will increase the engines responsiveness for pure exhilaration. But that’s not all, the instrument panel turns from white to red as well as changing settings to display sport focused information like acceleration, power delivery and turbo pressure.
The Peugeot 308 GTi is not just about performance either. For great everyday functionality the 3D connected navigation comes with three years of TomTom live satnav at no-extra cost for real-time updates on the move. The Mirror Screen functionality is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via the 9.7-inch touchscreen. You can keep abreast of all the latest news as well as stay connected meaning you’ll never miss a phone call or message again.
Improving the interior comfort and convenience there is a whole host of available features. This includes dual-zone climate control, cruise control, reversing camera, DAB radio, USB port, automatic lights and wiper, LED headlights and Bluetooth. This helps make the 308 GTi practical enough for you to be able to use on the daily school run.
Keeping you safe the 308 GTi comes with six airbags as standard while the optional driver assistance pack adds in adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. The Peugeot 308 GTi also comes with a Thatcham category 1 alarm as standard, so you can rest assured your investment is protected.
Why not book a test drive and discover for yourself what the Peugeot 308 GTi is truly capable of?
