In the 1990’s Mercedes branched out into the compact car market with the Mercedes A Class. It was a big break from anything Mercedes had previously produced but never really hit it off. That was until 2013 when Mercedes revamped the A Class giving it a hot hatch makeover. With stylish lines, sophisticated lighting configuration and sleek aerodynamic design the A Class now appeals to a broader range of drivers and offers younger drivers a great first step in Mercedes ownership. Only available with 5 doors the Mercedes A Class also makes a great premium quality family hatch.
Driving the A Class is a real pleasure, it sweeps into corners and offers firm but controlled handling. The suspension is sporty but still manages to absorb all the undulations found in UK roads. What’s more journeys in the A Class are remarkably quiet making the drive more pleasant.

As you’d expect from a Mercedes the A Class has a built to last quality. The interior is chic and solidly built. Leather look seats and stylised control knobs with chrome detailing ensure a premium feel is maintained. Both the steering wheel and driver’s seat are fully adjustable for ultimate driver comfort. Whilst both front seats have integrated headrests which offer great support and add to an already decadent level of comfort.
When you buy a used Mercedes A Class you expect the best. So you’ll be pleased to learn that the Mercedes A Class comes with an impressive level of kit as standard. There’s a 5.8” infotainment display, 16” alloy wheels, air-conditioning, reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, a radio and a single slot CD player. Spend a bit more on a higher level spec for more premium features like carbon fibre look interior trim, stainless steel pedals, sports styled steering wheel, LED headlights, Satnav and sports seats. Whilst you’ll also get improved exterior sports styling from the polished chrome exhaust pipes, 17” alloys and a radiator grille with chrome pins.
The Mercedes A Class scored an impressive 5 star Euro NCAP rating and models are available with a host of safety features including autonomous emergency braking, ISOfix child seat mounts, a bonnet that can pop up to cushion pedestrian impact and multiple airbags. There is also optional blind spot monitoring and lane keep assist for added peace of mind.
For a premium quality vehicle the Mercedes A Class offer great value running costs. The A180d diesel engine is the most economical offering 80.7mpg and 89g/km of CO2 and can achieve 0-62mph in an acceptable 11.3 seconds. The A180d also falls into the lowest insurance category so offers great all round running costs.
For those looking for something with a bit more oomph the A220d engine is a better option as it achieves 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds. However if you’re looking for pure power over fuel economy then you’re best opting for one of the petrol engines on offer, the A250 petrol engine achieves 0-62mph in an incredible 6.3 seconds.
The A Class requires servicing every 15,000 miles or annually whichever comes first. Expect to pay more for a Mercedes service than you would a less premium marque. But don’t let that put you off there are a range of service packages which mean you can spread the cost into affordable payments.
The Mercedes A Class only has a 3 year warranty but covers unlimited mileage which made it a good option for business users. This means that if you’re not too concerned with mileage you should be able to pick up a great deal on a used Mercedes A Class that has been kept in good condition and regularly serviced and maintained.
