Continuing our countdown on our top 10 used cars we take a look at number 9…

9. Nissan Qashqai

The Nissan Qashqai was first launched in the UK back in 2007. Nissan took a risk as the Qashqai offered something entirely new to the market, but the risk paid off for Nissan and sparked the trend for crossover vehicles. Since then Nissan have sold over 2.3 million Qashqai’s and have won multiple awards including What Car? Car of the year 2014 and What Car? Best Small SUV 2016.

The Qashqai perfectly blends SUV styling with the handling and fuel economy of a hatchback, which has really struck a chord with UK car buyers. A completely versatile vehicle the Qashqai is perfectly suited to family life.

Whilst not actually much bigger than a Ford Focus the Nissan Qashqai feels so much more spacious. There is ample space for 3 in the back and a generous 430L boot capacity. If you do need to regularly carry 3 adults in the back we’d suggest avoiding a used Qashqai with a panoramic roof, as it does eat into headroom and makes the rear passenger space a little more cramped.

The Qashqai offers a comfortable drive with a height adjustable driver’s seat and fully adjustable steering wheel ensuring you can find your optimum driving position. What’s more the high driving position gives you a commanding view of the road.

Entry level Qashqai models come with air-conditioning, a 5” colour touchscreen, USB sockets allowing you to play music through the stereo and Hill-start assist. Opt for a higher spec model and you’ll get more features like dual-zone climate control, alloy wheels, leather steering wheels, automatic lights and wipers, parking sensors, a rear parking camera accessed via the upgraded 7” touchscreen and a DAB radio. Whilst top of the range models also offer a 360° camera, heated leather seats, LED headlights, traffic sign recognition and 19” alloy wheels.

The Nissan Qashqai was developed in the UK so is perfectly equipped to deal with our far from perfect bumpy British roads. Whilst the handling hasn’t been described as fun it’s more than adequate and offers a responsive drive with well weighted steering.

With a host of safety features like 6 airbags, electronic stability control and corner stabilising technology to name a few, it’ll come as no surprise that the Nissan Qashqai received a 5 star Euro NCAP rating and scored well in all areas tested.

The Nissan Qashqai engines all offer acceptable running costs however it’s the 1.5 dCi diesel engine that offers the most economical engine with Nissan claiming 74.3mpg and less than 99g/km CO2.

Servicing is required around every 12,500 miles for most of the petrol’s and every 18,000 miles for the diesels, so yearly servicing is adequate for most people. Only the 1.5l diesel engine has a cam belt which needs changing every 5 years or 75,000 miles, all other engines are chain driven. Other regular maintenance costs come from replacing brake fluid every 2 years and replacing the coolant every 3 years. The warranty offered on Nissans is standard at 3 years or 60,000 miles but should you run into any problems Nissan parts are readily available and are inexpensive to buy.

Something to bear in mind when purchasing a used Nissan Qashqai is that it only comes with a tyre inflation kit as standard. So if you prefer to have a conventional spare wheel, it’s worth looking out for a used Qashqai model that comes with one or consider that you may need to buy one separately.
