The Royal family have access to some of the very best cars on the market. Many of the Royal Family state cars come from prestige British car brands like Bentley and Rolls Royce. However the Royal family’s personal cars range from robust 4x4’s to classic automobiles.
Some of our favourite personal Royal family cars include:
The Land Rover Defender has enjoyed a long history with Queen Elizabeth. The Queen is said to have got her first Land Rover Defender back in 1952 and has remained a fan ever since. Popular at Balmoral the Defender is perfect for exploring the challenging terrain of the Cairngorms.
The Royal Household are frequently seen in other models from this marque, so it will come as no surprise that Land Rover is one of the only car companies to hold three Royal Warrants which include those of Her Majesty The Queen, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.
A firm fan of Jaguars the Queen received a Daimler V8 in 2001 for her personal use. The car was reportedly adapted to meet the Queen’s exacting standards and modifications are said to have included, an armrest with a sliding holder that was designed to fit the Queen’s handbag in and a radio which connected directly with the Home Office and Downing Street.
The Duke of Edinburgh had his very own Metrocab delivered to Buckingham Palace back in 1999 and frequently used it for personal and state visits in the city. The Metrocab allowed the Duke of Edinburgh to travel through London virtually incognito.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Metrocab was also one of the first LPG powered cars. Now off the road the Duke’s Metrocab can still be viewed at the Sandringham Estate museum.
Most of us will have seen Prince Charles Aston Martin DB6 MKII even if we weren’t aware of it. This little car rose to global fame when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge drove to their wedding reception in it.
Prince Charles received the car as a gift from his mother on his 21st birthday and has still not parted with it. However the gas guzzling car didn’t meet with the Princes environmental ethos. So in 2008 Prince Charles had Aston Martin alter the car so that it ran on biofuel distilled from excess wine produced near his Highgrove Estate.

A match made in harmony! Taking his and hers to a new level both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were proud owner of Volkswagen Golfs whilst still studying. Explore our current Golf Stock and find your very own Golf at Stoneacre.
All the younger members of the Royal Household are said to be fans of Audi cars and the head of Audi was even invited to the Duke and Duchesses wedding back in 2011.
Since announcing his engagement to Meghan Markle Prince Harry has released details about how they managed to keep their relationship under wraps. Apparently Prince Harry used his Audi RS6 to collect Meghan directly from Heathrow runway.
The Queen is the only person in Britain legally not required to hold a driving licence.
Queen Elizabeth learnt to drive whilst serving in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, during the Second World War and is said to be one of the only members of the Royal Household who could actually get a broken down car up and running.
The only car companies to hold Royal Warrants from The Queen are Bentley, Jaguar Land Rover and Vauxhall.
