Documents Needed to Part Exchange

Just as it is when selling your car, it's important to have the correct documents in hand when trading in your car.

Not only does this make the part exchange process easier, but some are needed for legal reasons alone.

What documents do I need to part exchange my car?

Most of the documents you need relate to the legal exchange of the car from yourself to us as a dealership - meanwhile, others can actually add value to your car.

V5C (Log Book)

Your car's V5C document - or Log Book - is a document to show the history of all those who have been associated with the car, whether they've been an owner or a keeper.

It is also a document that helps corroborate information, such as the vehicle's current owner/keeper, VIN, date of registration, engine size, and other such details.

One vital aspect of the V5C document is that parts of it need to filled out by both the owner and dealer to make the exchange official.

Driving Licence

In relation to your V5C document, you'll also need to bring your driving licence with you.

This is required so the dealer can cross-reference the address on the V5C to that on your licence - as such, it's important to keep your details on both up to date.

Proof of Address

As a general proofing measure, a document that proves your address and corresponds with other documents is also needed.

MOT Certificate

With an MOT certificate required to legally drive the car on the road, this document holds quite a bit of importance.

So as you might imagine, having the car's current MOT certificate to hand will help matters dramatically - being in possession of previous certificates will also be useful.

If your car is less than three years old, then this won't be of a concern, as it won't be old enough to require an MOT.

Service history

To help maximise your car's part exchange value, having a full service history for the vehicle will be a big step towards this.

If you can demonstrate evidence of a service history that has spanned the entirety of the car's existence, you'll go some way in ensuring a great part exchange valuation.

This is also a good way of confirming the car's mileage.

Anything else I need to bring?

Spare Keys - We will require both sets of keys when you part exchange at Stoneacre, as is standard practice.

Locking Wheel Nut - This is an important piece of equipment, as it allows technicians to remove the wheels, though not all cars will have them.

Owner's Manual - Ideally, you'll still have the original owner's manual for your car, which will help the next owner to get to know the vehicle easier.

Finance Settlement Letter - If you still have outstanding finance on the car you're part exchanging, it can be useful to bring along the latest finance settlement letter.
