Let’s begin with the biggest news about the New Insignia Grand Sport. It’s BIG! Seriously BIG. Hugely, massively, gargantuan BIG!! Did I also mention that it’s BIG?
Vauxhall has set its stall out – a very big stall, obviously – to take on the vastly proportioned Skoda Superb in the super-size stakes. There’s so much cabin room that unless you have the wing-span of a Condor, it’s impossible to touch the passenger door from behind the wheel.
And in the back…well, there’s tonnes more headroom and let’s just say you’ll have no trouble fitting in the front row of an international rugby scrum. The rest of the players could fit in the boot.
Ok, perhaps that’s a slight exaggeration, but with a new tailgate design helping the make the boot deeper, wider and taller, the new Insignia’s 565-litre capacity is seriously roomy and every bit as big as the Skoda. See…I told you it was BIG!!
Smooth and refined…with a spirited side
Yeah, yeah, I know…size isn’t everything. So let’s take a look at how the Grand Sport drives.
It’s powered by a choice of engines, including a 163bhp 1.5-litre turbo petrol, and a new, potentially class-leading 1.6-litre CDTi diesel with up to 170bhp. The result is some serious poke and, thanks to the car’s updated Epsilon 2 architecture and 175kg less timber than the previous model, you can really feel the difference.
Handling is smooth and responsive enough in the corners to keep you interested, without being a thrill-a-minute hair-raiser - this is a family car or motor-way cruiser, remember.
Double-glazed windows help make the ride refined and quiet, and three drive modes – Normal, Tour and Sport – mean there’s an option to match the road conditions and your mood: Sport mode gives you an opportunity to experience the car at its most spirited.!
The Grand Sport is still in prototype mode, so we can’t tell you too much about how it will look – even we haven’t seen it in all its glory yet. However, a sneak-peak beneath its camouflage exterior tells us the new model boasts a new swooping roofline, higher and wide at the rear, which will bring it in line with Vauxhall’s more recent models. Rest assured, as soon as we see it unveiled, you’ll see it too!
Gadgets galore, to help you stay connected
Naturally, cars in this sector come jam-packed with a dash loaded with tech and gadgets. The Insignia Grand Sport is no exception. The full tech-pack has yet to be revealed but a sophisticated infotainment system will sync with your smartphone and apps, letting you connect digitally so you can safely make and take calls, send and receive texts, plus more. You’ll also get heated windscreens to make those icy mornings a little more bearable, ventilated seats, head-up displays, digital dials, and more.
