To mark 30 years since the birth of the seminal 205 GTi, Peugeot will be putting on sale the 208 GTi 30th Anniversary special edition.

As well as celebrating three decades of the classic hothatch, the car also commemorates 30 years of the GTi badge, a moniker that carries a lot of weight when it comes to potent hatchbacks.

The 208 GTi 20th Anniversary has been developed by Peugeot Sport and will likely be on public display at this week’s Paris motor show, then go on sale in November.

To make the limited edition model standout from the standard 208 GTi, the 30th Anniversary variant gets an upgraded version of the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that now produces 205bhp and 300Nm of torque. This power is put through the six-speed manual gearbox borrowed from the RCZ R and manages 0-62mph in 6.5 seconds.

Despite being such a strong power unit, the 208 GTi 30th Anniversary’s engine is Euro 6 emissions compliant, and with Peugeot’s Stop & Start tech employed, the limited edition emits just 125g/km of CO2.

Recalibrated ESP and traction control, a lower centre of gravity and revised steering calibration and suspension settings mean the 208 GTi 30th Anniversary is also more composed on the road.

The Anniversary edition also benefits from a 10mm lower suspension set up to that of the car it improves upon, as well as a wider track at the front and rear and new 18-inch matt black alloys to boot. Combine these mechanical and cosmetic additions and you’ve got yourself a pretty brutish hothatch.

Before experiencing such technical changes, the 208 GTi 30th Anniversary’s bodywork might very well be the first thing you notice, with Peugeot recreating the Onyx Concept’s two-tone, dual material look and showcasing the car it its alluring black and red paintwork. If this is a little too intense on the eye, you can also choose from Pearl White and Ruby Red colour schemes.

The black and red theme carries on inside the Anniversary car, joining Peugeot Sport-developed front bucket seats made primarily from Alcantara.

Expect the run of Peugeot 208 GTi 30th Anniversary editions not to exceed 100 examples, bringing a great deal of exclusivity to the model and make it a very collectable hothatch.
