Ford was “overwhelmed” by the response given during the Champions League final where the first 500 Ford Mustangs were up for pre-order, with over 9,300 people attempting to reserve an example.
The American manufacturer and a primary sponsor of the elite football tournament allowed prospective buyers of the brand new Mustang, which is headed for Europe early next year, to reserve one of the first 500 destined for the continent during the final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
After the game, which lasted 120 minutes, registrations closed, but Ford revealed that it had surpassed 500 registrations after around 30 seconds of the referee starting the match in Lisbon.
Roelant de Waard, vice president, marketing, sales & service, Ford of Europe said: “We knew there was huge excitement building for the new Ford Mustang coming to Europe, but the response during the Champions League final was overwhelming."
Ford allocated the 500 Mustangs to 20 countries around Europe, with 130 of those headed to the UK in right-hand-drive guise. Those who were successful in registering for the cars will be notified in the coming weeks, after which, each individual will be invited to make their full order at their local dealership.
The new Mustang arrives in early 2015 and will be the first ever to be offered across Europe. Customers can order from either fastback or convertible models and have the choice of the traditional 5.0-litre V8 that produces 420bhp or the brand new 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost unit that serves up 305bhp.
Ford’s Sync 2 connectivity and navigation system will also be available, as well as heated and ventilated seats, park assist, black leather trim, chrome detailing and 19in alloy wheels.
